“The Godfather” Actor James Caan Passes Away At 82

James Caan, one of the numerous performers from “The Godfather” who will never be forgotten, passed away on Wednesday (U.S. Pacific Time), his family announced on Twitter, during the year that the globe is commemorating the movie’s golden anniversary.

Although Caan had a very busy post-Sonny filmography, he is best known for playing Sonny Corleone, the brash, impulsive son of the Don, depicted by Marlon Brando. Caan was 82 when he passed away.

According to ‘Variety,’ the brief tweet states, “It is with great regret that we notify you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.” The family requests that you continue to respect their privacy during this trying time. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and genuine condolences.”

According to ‘Variety,’ Caan also had important parts in a number of other well-known movies, such as ‘Misery,’ ‘Elf,’ ‘Thief,’ ‘Godfather Part II,’ ‘Brian’s Song,’ and ‘The Gambler.’

According to “Variety,” Al Pacino was cast as Michael and Caan as Sonny “as part of a complex compromise between Paramount and Coppola” after Caan initially auditioned for the role of Michael, the college-educated war hero son who would eventually play Don. The studio, Paramount, supported this casting for a time.

The Bronx-born James Edmund Caan attended Hofstra University after enrolling at Michigan State University, where Coppola and Caan were classmates (he played American football for the university team).

According to “Variety,” Caan, who continued to work until 2013 and even provided the voice for “The Godfather” video games, would frequently portray violent roles. But the 1970s were the decade he made the most of.
