Mega Millions Jackpot Crossed $1 Billion Mark

The Mega Millions jackpot has surpassed $1 billion for only the third time in the game’s 20-year history, after the winning numbers were drawn Tuesday night and no winner was declared.

The estimated jackpot for Friday, July 29’s Mega Millions drawing is currently $1.02 billion.

Tuesday’s winning numbers were 7-29-60-63-66. Mega Ball was fifteen and Megaplier was three.

Before Tuesday night’s drawing, the jackpot had reached an estimated $830 million, making it the third-largest in the game’s history.

“Friday night’s drawing will be the thirty-first since the jackpot was won in Tennessee on April 15,” Mega Millions announced early Wednesday.

Even though Friday’s prize is now estimated to be worth more than $1 billion, it still falls short of the record jackpot won on October 23, 2018 in South Carolina. The winning ticket holds the record for the largest lottery prize ever won on a single ticket, at $1.53 billion.

In California, Minnesota, New York, and Tennessee, only four Mega Millions jackpots have been won in 2018.

The cash value of Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing was $487.9 million, according to a company press release. The estimated cash value of Friday’s drawing is $602.5 million.

Pat McDonald, the current Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium and Director of the Ohio Lottery, says, “We are anticipating the growing jackpot.” “It is truly astounding to watch the jackpot grow over a period of months and reach a billion dollars.

We encourage customers to maintain a healthy balance between work and play and to enjoy the ride. Someone will prevail.”

As the numbers were being drawn at 11 p.m. ET, those attempting to access the Mega Millions website received an error message indicating that the site had crashed.

The Mega Millions website was offline for more than two hours Tuesday night due to record-breaking traffic, according to a statement released by the company.

Tuesday night’s drawing yielded a total of 6,775,330 winning tickets at all prize levels. Nine tickets matched the five white balls to win the Mega Millions second prize, one of which was sold in Ohio and was worth $3 million due to the inclusion of the optional Megaplier.

The remaining eight Match 5 tickets, each worth $1 million, were sold as follows: two in New Jersey, two in New York, and one in California, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio.

In the 29 drawings since the jackpot was last won in Tennessee on April 15, there were more than 28.1 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 42 worth $1 million or more, according to the company.

These large prizes were won in 17 states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia.

Winners of the lottery have two payment options: a lump sum or annuity payments over 29 years.

The majority of lottery winners choose lump-sum payouts, but record inflation has complicated matters, according to experts.

“If we believe that inflation will persist for some time,” tax and estate planning attorney Kurt Panouses told ABC News’ Deirdre Bolton, “you might want to consider taking an annuity rather than a lump sum.”
