Jordanian MP Arrested by Israel on Suspicion of Smuggling Weapons
According to a news report on the Jordanian channel Al-Mamlaka, which cited the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, an MP for Jordan was detained by Israel Police at the Allenby Crossing between Jordan and Israel.
Police reportedly detained the man who was allegedly trying to smuggle guns and gold.
Customs personnel, who are not permitted to check members of parliament, allegedly got intelligence regarding the minister—MP Imad Al-Adwan, according to the Jordanian Ministry—and conducted an examination as a result.

They reportedly found evidence of a smuggling effort for 100 kg of gold, 12 long weapons, 12 ZIG pistols, and 167 Glock pistols entering Israel during the check.
According to Maariv, Jordanian MP Khalil Atieh requested that he be released “immediately” by the Israeli authorities.
The Israeli government detained a Jordanian lawmaker on Saturday night after discovering him smuggling large quantities of gold and hundreds of guns into Israel, according to the Amman Foreign Ministry.
Imad Al-Adwan, the politician, was reportedly detained at the Allenby Bridge border crossing, which is about five kilometers east of the city of Jericho, which is governed by the Palestinian Authority, according to Jordanian media on Sunday.
The spokesman for the Jordanian ministry said that investigators were looking into the matter “to determine the merits of the circumstance and address it as soon as possible.”
Adwan has been quoted as endorsing the terrorist organization Hamas and urging “resistance” against the “Zionist enemy,” according to World Israel News.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment, but according to Kan News, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi will not take calls about the event from his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.
Over the past year, there has been an increase in violence. Israel claims that illicit firearms, including those smuggled from the nearby Jordan, have been pouring into the Palestinian territories of Judea and Samaria.
The most recent episode poses a risk of worsening already strained ties between Jordan and the Jewish state.
Khalil Atieh, a Jordanian MP, allegedly urged Al-Adwan’s immediate release, according to the Israeli news outlet Maariv.
