During the height of the Hong Kong vs. China protest, Liu Yifei, a key member of the Mulan cast, posted comments online endorsing the Hong Kong police.
The globe took notice of the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, and many people supported them.
As a result, most of her admirers were not pleased when Liu Yifei expressed her support for the police.

In the midst of all of this, the casting of Indian-British performer Naomi Scott as Jasmine caused controversy online.
Because of this, many have accused Disney of “browning up” a Middle Eastern persona and adhering to the myth that Middle Easterners and Indians are the same people in the West.

Later, a Disney representative clarified that the company was collaborating with members of the dwarf community to prevent damaging concepts from the original animation from being spread.
