Beyond that, the show descends from its second-season cliffhanger into an increasingly convoluted world of shifting timelines, battling super-teams, and existential dangers, presented with plenty of goofy humor and irreverence but increasingly aimed at what feels like a hardy band of loyalists with the patience to keep pace as the strange new elements pile up.

Before changing his name to Viktor, Page is reintroduced as Vanya, and the reaction of his siblings is incorporated into that plotline.

Given all the intricate and moving parts that must be juggled, it’s understandably only a small part of the show, especially with the addition of the Sparrow Academy, a second group of very special infants also gathered by the Umbrella gang’s “father,” Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), following their 1960s adventures in season two.

On several fronts, including a physical dance sequence that emphasizes the show’s humorous tone, the disoriented members of the original squad dance with their alternate-timeline siblings throughout the entire season.

A relationship between Luther (Tom Hopper) and a Sparrow (Genesis Rodriguez), whom one of his siblings mockingly refers to as “gravity Barbie,” is among the encounters, which also include animosity and arguments.

The various subplots, however, produce diminishing benefits once the most recent blueprint has been created, taking odd detours along the way to the final confrontation with the amorphous danger.

The show struggles with the difficulties posed by changing those outcomes and eventualities by hopping around in time and introducing a completely new cast of characters.

“Umbrella Academy” will continue to have its devoted fanbase, which is a tremendous asset in streaming, like practically any genre show.

The third season of Amazon’s “The Boys,” which just concluded, shows that it is possible to adapt edgy graphic-novel material and keep narrative momentum in a more focused fashion.

In contrast, this recent batch of episodes pale in comparison.

Without giving anything away, the third season’s ending leaves plenty of opportunity for a fourth, which confirms the notion that it’s time to start making preparations for a fitting end.

Because, well, when it rains, it pours, especially when a big-budget show like “Umbrella Academy” begins to look like its best days are behind it.

The third season of “The Umbrella Academy” debuts on Netflix on June 22.
