Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 leaves many dead in Afghanistan and Pakistan

KABUL: According to Afghan officials, at least 225 people were murdered in the country’s east as a result of an earthquake that struck early on Wednesday in portions of heavily populated Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

earthquake in pakistan and afganistanAccording to the USGS, the earthquake occurred in southeast Afghanistan at a depth of 51 kilometers, roughly 44 kilometers (27 miles) from the city of Khost.

The chairman of the Taliban administration’s disaster management agency, Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, stated that more information would be provided after additional inquiry was finished.

According to our initial information, there were casualties and damage from the earthquake; we are looking into it, he added.

In Pakistan, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

According to a tweet from the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India felt shaking at a distance of about 500 miles.

According to eyewitness testimonies shared on the EMSC website and Twitter, it was felt in both the capital cities of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Islamabad and Kabul.

One witness from Kabul reported experiencing “strong and long jolts” on EMSC. Another witness from Peshawar in northwest Pakistan commented, “It was strong.”
