Personal information of CCW holders exposed by Data Breach
The California State Sheriffs’ Association notified the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday that the California Department of Justice had had a breach as part of the rollout of its 2022 Firearms Dashboard Portal, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a statement saying, “This public site permits access to certain information; but, personal information of concealed carry weapon permit holders is not supposed to be viewable.” Name, age, address, C.I.D. number, and license type (Standard, Judicial, Reserve, and Custodial) are among the details that may be included.
All Californians who have concealed handgun permits are impacted by the breach, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Officials from the Justice Department removed the dashboard website and any associated connections as soon as they became aware of the incident, but it’s likely that some private information was uploaded elsewhere online.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, “it is unknown just how long the material remained available.”
The office of California Attorney General Rob Bonta informed law enforcement that it is “working with haste” to ascertain the extent of the breach and has plans to speak with permit holders personally to inform them.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Bonta’s office will put in place a mechanism to lessen any injury or damages that permit holders sustain as a result of the breach.
The attorney general’s office issued a statement saying, “We are investigating an expose of people’ personal information associated to the DOJ Firearms Dashboard.”
“It is unacceptable for any unlawful distribution of personal information. We are moving quickly to resolve this issue and will offer further details as soon as we can.
Anyone whose information was affected by the breach is urged to go to https://ift.tt/8FgjbUa and file a report, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
