Hans Russell Died: Jackson River-Runner With Botulism Dies

Hans Russell died at the age of 56 on Wednesday after a nine-week battle with botulism. He was an outdoor enthusiast and passed away in Salt Lake City Hospital.

Russell decided to end his own life after realizing that his condition wasn’t improving and “probably wasn’t going to change”, according to Russell’s mother Joanna Jennings. Russell died Wednesday afternoon at the University of Utah Medical Center.

Jennings expressed gratitude to Russell’s medical team for their help after he contracted food-borne botulism on a solo camping trip that he took in City of Rocks (Idaho) on September 26.

What happened to Hans Russell?

According to Jennings the source of botulinum poison is unknown. Jennings said that Russell’s botulinum-toxin contamination may have been caused by any food Russell purchased.

However, they still have many questions. Russell’s doctors believed that he had eaten a can of soup from a supermarket that was not properly refrigerated.

Botulism A is a rare and dangerous bacterial infection that can cause paralysis and difficulty breathing. Botulism had trapped Russell in his body.

He became paralyzed and was unable speak other than through hand squeezes. He also lost his ability to breathe and was conscious and pain-free. He worked in Jackson for over ten years.

Who was Hans Russell?

For the past six years, he has been a bus driver for Lewis & Clark River Expeditions. He is a well-known “famous kayaker”, who enjoys all forms of recreation and has run many challenging whitewater sections in Idaho and Wyoming.

He enjoyed paragliding and reading, as well as rock climbing, kayaking, and playing the guitar. Russell is now with his mother Joanna, father Robert, and older brother Eric.

Jennings said that she plans to scatter a portion of Russell’s cremains at a designated location. Russell was cremated.

When talking about his hobbies, he mentioned that he enjoyed playing guitar, paragliding and rock climbing as well as reading.

His mother Joanna, his father Robert, and brother Eric have all been left behind. Jennings reported that Russell was cremated.

She said she will leave a small piece of Russell in a meaningful location. His death has been deeply felt by all. Chopnews also sends deep condolences.
