Who was Sir Richard Sutton?
Sir Richard was one of the UK’s wealthiest persons, with assets worth over £200 million and a spot on the Sunday Times Rich List in 2017.
He owned the 6,500-acre Benham Estate in West Berkshire and the Stainton Estate in Lincolnshire, among other properties and farms.
On 2020, he was ranked 435th in The Sunday Times Rich List, with a family fortune of £301 million, up £83 million from the previous year.
According to the directory, Sir Richard’s company owns the Sheraton Grand Park Lane and the Athenaeum in London, as well as three smaller venues.
What went wrong with Sir Richard Sutton?
On April 7, this year, an attack occurred at Sir Richard’s Moorhill estate near Gillingham, Dorset, which he shared with the Schreiber family after the defendant’s parents divorced.
On the evening of the attack, Schreiber, who had been living with Sir Richard, 83, and his mother Anne, 66, had phoned a number of persons he knew and made comments that prompted fears for their safety.
Schreiber was said to be enraged with his mother for “abandoning” his father, who was depressed, and moving in with Sir Richard, according to the trial.
On the eighth anniversary of the death of his drunken father, David Schreiber, he began the knife assault on the couple after his mother yelled at him for being “drunk like his father.”
“I just went completely insane, I completely snapped, and I just launched for her and starting hitting her indiscriminately,” he told the court.
Sir Richard, a father of two and grandfather of five, received three 12cm deep facial wounds and five 12cm deep chest wounds.
At roughly 9.15 p.m., he was pronounced dead on the spot.
Ms Schreiber sustained up to 15 separate injuries, including head and torso wounds, as well as a partially severed spinal chord that rendered her paralysed.
What has Richard’s family said about him?
“We applaud the conclusion of the trial and that justice has been perceived to be done,” Sir Richard’s family said in a statement following the sentencing.
“However, this was a tragic and devastating loss of life, taken far too soon, of a generous, loving, elderly man who only wanted to enjoy his golden years; an elderly man who was our father, a brother, a grandfather, and a friend to all who knew him; an elderly man who was our father, a brother, a grandfather, and a friend to all who knew him.”
“We will always cherish our memories of him, and his principles of being kind and compassionate to everyone he encountered and worked with, as well as the love, respect, and devotion he exhibited to his family and friends on a daily basis, will live on.”
“Whether it was in his hotels, properties, or farming holdings, Sir Richard had a desire for excellence in business.”
“The British countryside has lost an incredible champion who was first and foremost a dedicated and active farmer.”
“He instilled in us all the value of safeguarding and preserving the nature around us, as well as the importance of leaving it in a better state for future generations.”
“We will never forget him, nor will we forget his unending love and generosity.” He’ll be terribly missed.”
