Who is Colin Sutton?
From January 2003 to January 2011, Colin Sutton worked as a Special Investigations Officer for the Met Police, where he led more than 30 successful murder investigations, including the Levi Bellfield case.
He was the principal investigator in the murder of Amélie Delagrange.
The French student, who was visiting the UK, was assassinated while strolling home from a night out with friends on Twickenham Green in London.
She was discovered with major head injuries in a park on the evening of August 19, 2004, and died the same night in the hospital.
How was the Night Stalker was arrested?
Grant was apprehended on November 15, 2009, when police officers coveringtly watching the Croydon area for attempted break-ins discovered him walking back to his car after attempting to enter the home of an elderly woman.
When Sutton was called in to help solve the case, he utilised the same methods he had used to find Bellfield.
Instead of utilising DNA, he established a burglary team of over 70 cops and stationed them in and around a Croydon street where there had been frequent attacks.
The Night Stalker attacked three times on their first night of watch, but each attack was just beyond the area being observed, so Sutton devised a thorough surveillance strategy for the street.
However, detectives were able to catch the serial rapist fleeing to his car on CCTV and were able to identify his vehicle by examining each frame.
Who plays Colin Sutton In Manhunt?
In ITV’s new series Manhunt, Martin Clunes portrays DCI Sutton, who investigates Grant’s 17-year terror rampage and the investigation that brought him to justice.
Manhunt: The Night Stalker will premiere on ITV on Monday, September 20, 2021, at 9 p.m. for four nights.
Colin Sutton involvement in the murder of Amélie Delagrange and the capture of Levi Bellfield
The Met assigned Sutton to the investigation, and he dedicated himself to identifying Amélie’s killer.
Despite the fact that he had very little evidence, his methodical approach and the diligence of his coworkers contributed to the case’s eventual breakthrough.
He and his colleagues discovered that she was maybe murdered by the same individual who had murdered Marsha McDonnell 18 months before.
Marsha, 19, was bashed over the head with a blunt instrument near her house in Hampton, London, and died as a result.
The cases of Amélie and Marsha, who were both horribly murdered by Bellfield, were solved by Sutton’s squad.
Sutton told Crime and Investigation in an interview that “thorough and laborious study of [thousands of hours of] CCTV photos and mobile phone records” helped offer the information that led to Bellfield’s conviction.
“Even if that was what led us to suspect Bellfield, the complete lack of scientific proof necessitated more than three years of patient case-building and old-fashioned detective work,” he continued.
This, according to Sutton, helped “unearth small pieces of circumstantial evidence that, when combined, produced the strong case that led to his conviction.”
When the Metropolitan Police took up the case from Surrey Police after Bellfield’s conviction, Sutton linked the death of 13-year-old Milly Dowler to the two young women’s killings.
Bellfield, now 52, was sentenced to life in prison in 2011 for the murders of Milly and the other two victims.
Where is Colin now?
Sutton, who now lives in mid-Suffolk, wrote a book called Manhunt about catching the serial killer, in which he recounts how he detected a link between the three deaths.
He flourished “under the pressure” of tracking down the serial killer, finally apprehending the savage killer “when the case seemed hopeless.”
Sutton worked as a Detective Chief Inspector in three separate police forces for a total of 15 years in varied jobs.
Since leaving the force, he has given technical guidance to best-selling crime authors and TV screenwriters, worked for radio and television, written about crime for national media, and is currently “procrastinating while writing book 2,” according to his Twitter account.
