The tunnel covering 1.6 miles will remain closed six nights a week so that crews can fix Sandy-related damage.
The team will be repairing the damage caused by flooding to the plumbing, electrical, and communications systems.
These include pump rooms, suppression systems, curb drainage, steel safety walkways and walls, exhaust ducts, and many more.
Holland Tunnel: Repairs
The holland tunnel will remain closed six nights a week for Superstorm Sandy repairs. New Jersey drivers can only access the tunnel, which dates back to 1995.
They can repair or replace mechanical, electrical, and communications systems damaged by Sandy seawater flooding. They will also fix the tunnel’s civil, architectural, and structural elements.
Officials from the Port Authority advise that drivers traveling to New Jersey via tunnels should avoid them or use alternative routes like Staten Island bridges, Lincoln Tunnel, Staten Island bridges, or George Washington Bridge.
Alternative mass-transit options, such as NJ Transit and PATH, are also recommend.
The Holland Tunnel was one of many East River subway tunnels that had to be close for emergency repairs following the storm. Many were shut down for several weeks or months to fix Sandy-relate damage.
Detours
The Holland Tunnel connects Hudson Square, Manhattan, to Jersey City, NJ. It is an engineering marvel.

Although the Holland Tunnel will be much better when you return to New Jersey, expect a delay of thirty minutes.
Still, the delays at the GW Bridge are more than an hour when you arrive from 80/95 Express. However, they get better as you travel further down Hudson.
Tolls
