Three Men Sentenced to Death for Refusing to Give Way for Saudi’s Dream City Project

Saudi Arabia has silently sentenced three men from the Howeitat tribe of the northern Tabuk province for refusing to vacate their home for a $500 billion dream-city, Neom. The city is the pet project of the young crown prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. 

The three members, Shadli, Ibrahim al-Howeiti and Atallah, were detained in 2020, protesting against the forceful eviction and they were given capital punishment by Saudi Arabia’s special courts on 2nd October. Other Howeiti people were sentenced to fifty years of jail. The grim circumstance shows clear red flags in Saudi.

There are many resonant events that attract attention as well as they are publicized. The brother of Shadli, Abdul Rahim al-Howeitat, was executed by the special force for rebelling against the displacement of residents of Tabuk province in April 2020. Abdul regularly shares videos on social media criticizing the eviction. Sooner, he became the voice of the masses protesting against the Neom City. 

On his last social media post, he called it ‘state terrorism’. However, the government said that his death resulted from a shootout with the special forces and accused him of throwing molotov cocktails at the force. His dead body was handed over after four weeks to the family. But eyewitnesses claimed his death was an extrajudicial execution. 

Those who have spoken against the regime have cracked down and been silenced by force. More than 150 dissenters of the Howeitat community have been sent under the bar asking for compensation

Relatives of the Shadli, Abdulilah and Abdullah Dukhail faced fifty years of prison and fifty years of ban on travel for supporting them. The Guardian reported that a student of Leeds University, Salma al-Shehab was imprisoned for 34 years and Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani, a mother with five children, was sentenced to 45 years for criticizing Saudi on Twitter. The writer and programmer Osama Khaled was jailed for 32 years, according to the human rights group. 

Neom is a huge budget project of the de-facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, which would spread over 10,000 square miles of the Tabuk province. Inspired by video games, the prince announced his futuristic plan in 2017. Since then, it has raised the eyebrows of economists and architects. 

The glass-encased building stretching over 170 km, flying taxis, robot maids, constant AI surveillance etc. sounds like a utopia. Noticeably, the change in the course of action, from time to time, has raised questions about the feasibility of the plan. The project draws its money from Saudi’s Public Investment fund led by the Crown Prince himself. 

The Crown Prince Mohammad was considered progressive for his liberal policies. Soon after, he was found assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul by various dependable agencies. In Saudi, opposing the royal family means death or long-term imprisonment. In 2022, the authority executed 122 people, according to the report of Vice. In the country, the media is the regime’s puppet and scarcely reports any case related to the prince.
