Auction planned for modern hanbok suit worn by BTS’ Jimin now cancelled — here’s why
BTS fans went into a tizzy after it was announced that a modern hanbok suit — a revamped version of a traditional Korean outfit — earlier worn by band member Jimin was going under auction. In fact, ARMY (that’s what BTS’ global fanbase refers to themselves as) went into overdrive spreading news about the upcoming auction all over social media, with many even speculating how much Jimin’s hanbok suit would fetch. However, they now have to be met with severe disappointment as it has been learned that the planned auction is not happening after all. In case you’re wondering why, we’ve got the reason right here. Read on…
Myart Auction, which was supposed to arrange the bidding event for the hanbok worn by the K-pop superstar during a performance for NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in September, pulled the garment out of its online auction list at the nth hour, and only a preview of the outfit was available as the rest of the auction went forth as planned on the same day. However, it wasn’t a question of things turning sour or a conflict of interest or any other untoward legal hassle. All that happened was that the designer of Jimin’s suit got cold feet at the last moment and Myart Auction couldn’t get the bid rolling without his go ahead.
“Designer Kim Ri-eul has been working through sponsorships ever since he created hanbok suits five years ago. As this was the first attempt to sell his work, he felt immense pressure of only the commercial aspect being seen. Also, he feared the commercial activity could damage the worldwide status of the artist who wore it. As such, after reconsidering the matter, we decided to remove the item from auction,” read an official statement by Myart Auction.
Needless to say, BTS fans are crestfallen at the news — such is their loyalty even without any personal gain — that they’ve requested both the auction company and designer to reconsider their decision. The BTS Jimin gallery expresses deep regret at the cancellation of Jimin’s hanbok auction that was organized by Myart Auction and made by Kim Ri-eul. The auction of BTS Jimin’s hanbok can show that hanbok is one of the iconic representatives of Korean culture and can be an opportunity to tell the world of Korean culture. As such, we ask that designer Kim Ri-eul and Myart Auction officials reconsider,” read their official statement.
So, will the modern hanbok suit worn by BTS’ Jimin finally go for auction. Let’s wait and watch.
