The pandemic crisis of COVID-19 has affected the business of the entertainment industry to a great extent. While the second wave has again resulted into cinema halls shutting, during the unlock phase none of the Bollywood films managed to perform as per the expectations, which included Mumbai Saga, Saina, Roohi and others. On the other hand, south releases gave a boost with their performances and some of their films didn’t just manage to draw in the audience to the cinema halls, but also set new benchmarks at the box office. Master

Thalapathy Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan’s Master was the first big release during the unlock phase in 2021. The film took a thunderous opening and ended up grossing over Rs 200 crore at the global box office. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film was also released in a Hindi dubbed version but due to low promotions, it couldn’t fetch many collections. The comeback film of Pawan Kalyan, Vakeel Saab released on April 9 at the ticket windows. The courtroom drama, which is the remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s Pink, became the biggest opener of the year beating Master. The film has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in its opening week at the domestic market and is expected to dominate in the coming week as well.

Karnan

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dhanush’s Karnan released on April 9, which gave the actor his biggest opener. The film has earned around Rs 37 crore in its first week at the domestic market and is also getting good response from the international circuits. The film also features Rajisha Vijayan, Yogi Babu, Gouri Kishan and Lakshmipriyaa Chandramouli. The film is directed by Mari Selvaraj.

Sulthan

Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna starrer Sulthan, which marked the Tamil debut of the Karnataka Crush, enjoyed a great run at the box office to become a clean HIT with a collection of over Rs 35 crore. The action-packed film, which is written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and produced by S. R. Prakash Babu and S. R. Prabhu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures, also features Napoleon, Lal, Yogi Babu and Ramachandra Raju in pivotal roles.
