Rubina Dilaik fights with Shehzad Deol to take a stand for transgenders — Salman Khan’s show propagating progressive ideas at long last

In a recent episode of Bigg Boss 14, Rubina Dilaik had slammed Shehzad Deol left, right and center. The reason being that the latter had referred to fellow contestant Nishant Singh Malkani as a “hijra” and “chhakka” (eunuch) for not performing to his best during a task. This got Rubina incensed more than anyone else, and she let it rip at Shehzad for his insensitive comments, and rightly so, questioning how could he deride an entire gender/community just to insult someone, even if he may have a valid reason to (that’s a debate for another segment). It’s 2020, and such derogatory remarks can neither fly nor be tolerated any longer. Regardless whether you think Shehzad Deol was justified in admonishing Nishant Singh Malkani or not, the fact remains that his methodology was inexcusable. Again, it is 2020 for crying out loud, and not that making fun of the third gender (as eunuchs should be rightly called since, biologically, that’s what they are) was permissible in any era, but with the awareness and research acquired and made available all around us today, such tasteless comments, and a possibly regressive mindset, needs to be called out, if for nothing at all, then with the hope that the source of such unknowledgeable talk turns over a new leaf. It must also be noted that Rubina Dilaik was a part of the show, Shakti — Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki, where she had played a transgender. Firstly, kudos for being one of the few actors in our country willing to embrace such socially stigmatised characters. Secondly, even if this was the reason why she spoke up, fearing the backlash she may received given her celluloid association with the community — as some are saying — I say that it doesn’t matter. If good emanates out of vested interests or careful foresight, what matters is that good has emanated. Whatever be the case, three cheers to you, Rubina, and for your sake, I hope that you’ve learned something vital, Shehzad. Can’t believe I’m saying this, and I’m having to pinch myself while writing this, but even Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss seemns to be getting progressive. So, what’s your excuse?
