Tesla climbs nearly 10% on Monday after Credit Suisse upgrade

Shares in electric vehicle maker Tesla climbed nearly 10% on Monday after Credit Suisse upgraded the stock to “outperform” and the broader market rebounded.

Tesla had previously declined almost 20% in January amid a sell-off that dragged the Nasdaq down.

Shares were especially under pressure after CEO Elon Musk said on the company’s most recent earnings call that Tesla would not deliver any new model vehicles to customers in 2022, including the Cyberbtruck, an experimental pickup.

Instead, Musk informed shareholders that Tesla plans to focus on scaling production at its old and new factories, and to dedicate resources to developing a humanoid robot and driverless vehicle tech. Musk has been promising to make driverless vehicles a reality since 2016, and has yet to deliver a “robotaxi” safe for hands free use by drivers.

Credit Suisse saw a buying opportunity, and has a price target of $1,025 on shares of Tesla now.

Analyst Dan Levy wrote in a note out on Monday, “Tesla has surprised to the upside on margins, in large part driven by cost reductions; we believe the strong margins are sustainable.” And he said, “We believe legacy OEMs are taking clear steps to transitioning to an EV world, yet we expect Tesla to maintain a lead for the foreseeable future.”

The note also said, “Up until now Tesla margins have largely been a function of auto hardware sales, with some modest benefits of software…specifically FSD (Full Self-Drive features). However, as Tesla releases more FSD features and unlocks more deferred revenue (which likely flows through at 100% contribution margin), Tesla should see incremental margin benefit.”

This weekend, Musk said on Twitter, “Tesla will support FSD licensing by other manufacturers,” but did not say when or whether any automakers had expressed interest.

Other electric vehicle makers also rebounded on Monday, with Rivian up over 12% and Lucid up around 7%. Legacy automakers with significant plans for battery electric vehicle production, Ford and GM, also saw shares rise each more than 3% by mid-day on Monday.

According to analysis by the International Energy Agency, there were about 6.7 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) already on the roads around the world by the end of 2020, including 1.1 million in the US that year.

President Biden said last August that he wants half of all vehicles sold in the US to be electric by 2030, including hybrids and battery electric vehicles.

Bungie dispels Destiny 2 concerns post-Sony acquisition

With the release of Destiny 2’s biggest expansion just a little over three weeks away, players all over the world got some exciting news ahead of tomorrow’s reset. Sony has officially bought Bungie for $3.6 Billion. However, the latter company will run as an independent SIE subsidiary.

Bungie is best known for their work on notable titles such as Halo. However, the name Destiny became known to the gaming community in 2014 as one of the most renowned and addicting looter-shooters in the market.

With Destiny 2 being on the platform for almost four years now, Bungie has created a separate storyline for fans and veteran players. With Sony buying the company, Bungie cleared out a lot of air immediately after, by uploading a blog post on their official website.

Bungie’s recent blog post clears out the main concerns on the future of Destiny 2

A few minutes after the official news went out, a blog post was immediately released, clearing out players’ concerns. They cleared out most of the FAQs, which involved questions on exclusivity and changes in planned content.

Bungie x Playstation (Image via Bungie)
Bungie x Playstation (Image via Bungie)

As things stand right now, nothing is scheduled to change with this. Bungie has announced that they will keep the same content for the Light vs Dark saga until 2024.

In addition, anything related to crossplay will remain unchanged, where players can launch The Witch Queen expansion on a platform of their choice. The Year 5 expansion won’t have any platform exclusives throughout its planned runtime of one year.

Bungie will remain an independant subsidiary of SIEBungie will remain a multiplatform studio with the option to self-publishBungie is still maintaining D2, working on Destiny franchise expansion and a new IP

However, one of the main queries for players is regarding third-party applications such as the Companion app, Destiny Item Manager, and their accessibility. Thankfully, Bungie has responded to this, saying everything will stay the same as before.

While there aren’t any planned exclusives for the looter-shooter title, the Destiny franchise sure does have its fair share of history being exclusive for consoles. However, with the recent deal, Destiny 2 has shown no sign of changing its multi-platform service.

Justin Trudeau Tests Positive for Covid

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada has tested positive for the coronavirus after an exposure last week. He said on Twitter that he was not feeling ill.

He said later in an online news conference that two of his three children had also tested positive.

Mr. Trudeau has been isolating since last Thursday, when he learned that he had been exposed. He revealed his own positive test result in a statement posted to social media on Monday morning, and added that he would “continue to work remotely this week while following public health guidelines.”

Several Canadian news outlets reported that Mr. Trudeau and his family were relocated out of their official residence in Ottawa, the capital, by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police over the weekend as thousands of protesters converged on the city.

The police force declined to comment on those reports, citing security concerns.

Loosely organized trucker convoys traveled across the country to Ottawa to protest vaccine mandates, attracting supporters and millions of dollars in donations along the way. They gathered in front of Canada’s Parliament building on Saturday, clogging downtown streets, with cars and pickup trucks outnumbering the heavy trucks that initially made up the convoys.

Some protesters carried Canadian flags held upside down, traditionally a signal of dire distress or danger. At least one flag had swastikas drawn on it.

“Hate can never be the answer,” Mr. Trudeau said in the virtual news conference. “Over the past few days, Canadians were shocked and frankly, disgusted, by the behavior displayed by some people protesting in our nation’s capital.”

Some protesters were still in the area on Monday, and the Ottawa police said they expected “major traffic, noise and safety issues.”

Mr. Trudeau, who is fully vaccinated and received a booster dose at the beginning of January, planned to participate in his scheduled events remotely on Monday, including a question period in the House of Commons.

It is not the first time Mr. Trudeau has had to conduct his duties from home. His wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, came down with flulike symptoms in March 2020 and later tested positive for the coronavirus. As his wife isolated in one part of their home, Mr. Trudeau became the full-time caretaker to his three children, cleaning up and doing laundry, though cooked meals were dropped off.

Public health guidelines have changed recently in several provinces, including Ontario, where Ottawa is located. Ontario now requires vaccinated people who test positive for the virus to isolate for at least five days after the onset of symptoms, a household contact or a positive test; earlier in the pandemic, the minimum was about 14 days.

Close to 78 percent of Canadians are fully vaccinated, according to federal public health data, and 88 percent of people who are 5 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine.

Ian Austen contributed reporting from Ottawa.

Best Buy could cash in from rise of the metaverse, analyst says

Customers wait outside of a Best Buy store in downtown Toronto, Ontario on November 23, 2020 to pick up their online orders.

As companies and consumers grow more interested in the metaverse, Best Buy could cash in by selling more virtual reality headsets and pricier computers, an analyst says.

A research note published Monday by Loop Capital Markets said the consumer electronics retailer is well-positioned to tap into enthusiasm for nonfungible tokens, gaming and socializing in a virtual world. Best Buy is the largest PC retailer in the country, has big-box stores where shoppers can try on different headsets and has a team of tech experts who charge for helping consumers with setup, said Anthony Chukumba, the equity research firm’s managing director.

He reiterated Loop’s buy rating and price target of $150, about 52% higher than where Best Buy is currently trading. Best Buy’s shares are up about 1% as of midday Monday. They have fallen about 9% over the past 12 months.

A growing list of retailers from Nike to Ralph Lauren have dipped their toes into the metaverse. Nike bought virtual sneaker company RTFKT for an undisclosed sum in December. Ralph Lauren has experimented with ways that people can visit or shop at virtual stores on gaming platforms like Roblox and Zepeto.

For Best Buy, the financial opportunity is even simpler, Chukumba said: Consumers may need to upgrade computers to higher-resolution displays and buy extra equipment from monitors to microphones. That could drive a “massive PC upgrade cycle” and one for smartphones, too, he said.

Loop based its views on a conversation with an unnamed CEO and venture capitalist who specializes in NFTs, blockchain, decentralized finance, gaming and the metaverse, Chukumba said. He added, the person has worked in the tech industry since the late 1990s.

With the metaverse, two other merchandise categories — virtual reality and artificial reality devices and videogame consoles— may also gain steam, Chukumba said. Best Buy already has relationships with the major manufacturers that sell those devices, including Meta (formerly known as Facebook and the owner of Oculus), Sony and Apple. Apple is expected to have a VR/AR product coming soon.

Best Buy also has stores where consumers can try on and compare different headsets in person.

Another aspect of the metaverse could help Best Buy, too, Chukumba said. The technology could make it quicker and cheaper to run warehouse simulations that inspire more efficient ways to operate.

PSG name squad for Coupe de France clash against Nice, Neymar and Sergio Ramos miss out

PSG have named a 21-man squad for their French Cup clash with Nice tonight and some big names are conspicuous by their absence.

Neymar and Sergio Ramos have both been dropped from the side citing injury concerns. It raises doubts over their availability for PSG’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid in two weeks’ time.

The Brazilian has been sidelined since November with an ankle injury but recently resumed training and even started running. The medical update attested to the squad announcement, it’s said he’s completed the first cycle of running and will undergo tests this Monday to confirm the rest of his schedule.

Ramos recently sustained a knock to his calf in training on Thursday and will be reassessed in the middle of the week. His injury nightmare since arriving in the French capital in a shock transfer from Real Madrid continued following a fresh bout. The Spaniard has made only five club appearances so far and is now set for another spell on the sidelines. He’s hoping to recover in time for an emotional reunion with his old club, who come to the Parc des Princes on February 15 for the first leg.

Neymar, too, faces a race against time to become available for the clash, although it’s become a yearly occurrence for him to get injured around this time. Since his world-record €222 million transfer from Barcelona in 2017, the winger has missed a staggering 102 games through injury, while making 130 appearances in all competitions.

Mauricio Pochettino confirms that Lionel Messi will start for PSG: “He trained well this week after having been absent due to COVID. He played 30 minutes last week and I think he’s fit to start the match against Nice on Monday.”

PSG play two league games – away to Lille and home to Rennes – before welcoming Carlo Ancelotti’s in-form team.

Neymar and Ramos could miss those too as head coach Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t want to risk them upon their timely return.

On the bright side, Lionel Messi, who returned to the fold in their game against Reims last week, has been called up again, with Pochettino even confirming that he will start.

Many other key players also unavailable for PSG

Also missing in action for PSG is Giorginio Wijnaldum, whose time in the French capital has also been curtailed by injury problems since joining from Liverpool on a free transfer last summer.

The Dutchman is recovering from a sprain in his left ankle with damage to his ligament and is training individually with a view to returning to the squad next week.

Six players – Angel di Maria, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Abdou Diallo, Keylor Navas and Idrissa Gueye – are currently away on international duty.

Navas, Marquinhos and Di Maria are participating in the World Cup qualifiers while Hakimi, Diallo and Gueye were at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Layvin Kurzawa, Eric Ebimbe, Sekou Yansane and Ismael Gharbi are in training but lack match fitness.

The Hard-Line Russian Advisers Who Have Putin’s Ear

MOSCOW — The West is legalizing marriage between people and animals. Ukraine’s leaders are as bad as Hitler, and the country’s nationalists are “nonhumans.”

These are the views found in President Vladimir V. Putin’s inner circle, among the top Russian security officials who are likely to be at the table as their leader decides whether to launch an open war against Ukraine.

In remarks published by the Russian news media in the last year, these powerful men — largely born in the 1950s Soviet Union, as Mr. Putin was — have staked out even more reactionary positions than their president has, a sign of the harder-line turn that the Kremlin is taking as it escalates its fight with perceived enemies at home and abroad.

The rise of the security officials in the president’s orbit traces Mr. Putin’s evolution from a young leader who showed a friendly face to the West in the early 2000s — while surrounding himself with advisers who included prominent liberals — to the man now implicitly threatening to start a major war in Europe.

It is also a story of the Kremlin’s yearslong struggle to craft an ideology to underpin Mr. Putin’s rule: one that increasingly relies on a picture of the West as an enemy, of Ukraine as a threat and of Russia as a bulwark of “traditional values.”

“This is an attempt collectively to form a counter-ideology, since Putin doesn’t have an ideology,” Konstantin Remchukov, a Moscow newspaper editor with Kremlin ties, said of what he called the “conservative-reactionary” worldview of Russia’s security elite. “The key postulate is that everyone is against Russia.”

No one really knows how Mr. Putin makes his decisions or whom he listens to most as he considers his next steps. The Russian president, the Kremlin says, is reviewing written responses the United States and NATO delivered this past week to Moscow on its security demands — including a guarantee that Ukraine never become a member of NATO.

On Friday, the Kremlin said the West’s responses did not address Russia’s biggest security concerns. But Mr. Putin himself has kept silent, avoiding public comment on Ukraine since December, despite on-camera appearances nearly every day.

That leaves the hawks around him to offer clues to his thinking. Some of them first met Mr. Putin working with him in the Soviet K.G.B., and have been accused by Western officials of overseeing the assassinations, influence operations, cyber espionage and brutal warfare that have helped estrange the Kremlin from Europe and the United States.

Mr. Putin is known for indulging misleading, anti-Western tropes, but his main national security adviser, Nikolai Patrushev, espouses them with even greater ardor. Mr. Putin paints a picture of enemies bent on falsifying Russia’s glorious past, but his foreign intelligence chief, Sergei Naryshkin, has taken on the fight over history as a special priority.

Mr. Putin has embraced more state involvement in the economy, but his defense minister, Sergei K. Shoigu, has taken that trend to an extreme by pitching a huge state-led effort to build new cities in Siberia.

“Some kind of time machine is taking us back into the worst years of Hitler’s occupation,” Mr. Naryshkin said of Ukraine this month, describing its pro-Western government as a “true dictatorship.” He was opening an exhibit in Moscow titled “Human Rights Abuses in Ukraine.”

Mr. Shoigu last month called Ukrainian nationalists “nonhumans.” Mr. Patrushev has described the “Russophobia” in Ukraine as the outgrowth of a Western propaganda campaign dating to jealous European scribes who besmirched Ivan the Terrible.

“They didn’t like that the Russian Czar didn’t recognize their political and moral leadership,” Mr. Patrushev said of the 16th-century tyrant known for his fearsome secret police.

Now, as Mr. Putin weighs how far to raise the stakes in Ukraine, the question is how much he adopts the conspiratorial mind-set of his hawks. In Moscow, some analysts still see a pragmatic streak in Mr. Putin. He weighs the grievances and paranoia promoted by confidants like Mr. Patrushev, they say, against the more sober input of people like Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, a technocrat charged with keeping the economy running.

“These people are conservative radicals,” said Mr. Remchukov, who ran the 2018 re-election campaign of the mayor of Moscow, Mr. Putin’s former chief of staff. “It may be a conservative center, but Putin is in the center.”

Many signs, however, point to the “radicals” gaining sway. The most obvious change has been inside Russia, where the poisoning of the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny in 2020 was followed by a far-reaching crackdown last year on activists, the news media and even academics. Western officials said Mr. Navalny was poisoned by the Russian government, but Mr. Naryshkin, the foreign intelligence chief, has described the poisoning as engineered by Western agents seeking a “sacrificial victim” to help bring down Mr. Putin.

As they work to crush dissent, the hard-line security officials are also at the forefront of espousing “traditional values” as Russia’s superior alternative to a morally decaying West. A television channel was recently fined for showing a man with long hair and painted nails — “not corresponding to the image of a man of a traditional sexual orientation.” Two bloggers were sentenced to 10 months in prison for a sexually suggestive photo in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral.

“Father and mother are being renamed parent number one and two,” Mr. Patrushev said in a September interview, describing the West’s “foreign” values. “They want to give children the right to determine their own sex, and in some places they’ve gotten to the point of legalizing marriage with animals.”

Mr. Putin repeated the line about “parent number one and two” in an appearance a month later, but left out the zoophilia.

As Russian troops mass near Ukraine, another element of the security officials’ ideology looms large: the glorification of the Soviet past. Mr. Patrushev said the collapse of the Soviet Union “totally untied the hands of the Western neoliberal elite,” allowing it to impose its nontraditional values upon the world. He and his colleagues cast Russia as a nation destined to regain that status as a bulwark against the West, with Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries belonging to Moscow’s rightful sphere of influence.

“This is one of the darkest currents of Russian nationalism, multiplied by imperialism,” said Andrei Kolesnikov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Moscow Center think tank. The goal for Russia’s security elite, he said, is “the restoration of empire.”

Mr. Putin has himself described the collapse of the Soviet Union as a “geopolitical catastrophe.” But he also used to seek out the advice of a range of officials, including those with liberal points of view. Now, those officials have largely been pushed out of government, while the technocrats like Mr. Mishustin almost never speak out on matters beyond their immediate area of responsibility.

That leaves the class of elite security officials known collectively as the “siloviki,” many of whom — like Mr. Patrushev, Mr. Naryshkin and Aleksandr Bortnikov, Russia’s domestic spy chief — worked in the K.G.B. along with Mr. Putin.

Their sway extends well beyond security matters: Mr. Patrushev, an avid volleyball player, heads Russia’s Volleyball Federation, and his son is the minister of agriculture. Mr. Naryshkin oversees the Russian Historical Society, helping to lead the charge in glorifying — and, critics say, whitewashing — Russia’s past. Mr. Shoigu, the defense minister, indulges Mr. Putin’s interest in the outdoors as president of the Russian Geographical Society and takes Mr. Putin on regular vacations into the Siberian woods.

For these officials, analysts say, rising tensions with the West are a good thing, increasing their influence within the ruling elite.

“The spiraling confrontation and sanctions do not scare the siloviki but, on the contrary, open up more opportunities for them,” Tatiana Stanovaya, the founder of a political analysis firm, R. Politik, wrote recently.

Russian analysts are now left wondering whether Mr. Putin has enough of a pragmatic streak remaining to avoid an open war with Ukraine. Russia’s closure last month of Memorial International, the Moscow human-rights group that long angered Russia’s security establishment for uncovering the crimes of the Soviet secret police, represented a further swing by Mr. Putin toward the views of the siloviki.

But Western sanctions over a Ukraine incursion could have wide-ranging consequences, as shown by the plunge in the Russian stock market amid war fears in recent weeks. And military casualties could bring unpredictable aftereffects in domestic politics and stain Mr. Putin’s legacy.

“If we have war with Ukraine and fratricidal death, then that will be all that he will be remembered for,” Mr. Remchukov, the newspaper editor, said. “He can’t not understand what a sin that would be.”

Alina Lobzina, Khava Khasmagomadova and Oleg Matsnev contributed reporting.

Fed’s Bostic tells the FT the central bank could hike rates by a half-point if needed

President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Raphael W. Bostic speaks at a European Financial Forum event in Dublin, Ireland February 13, 2019.

Clodagh Kilcoyne | Reuters

The Federal Reserve isn’t ruling out raising interest rates by half of a percent instead of the typical quarter-point move if inflation remains high, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Bostic reiterated to the news outlet his call for three quarter-point interest rate increases in 2022, starting in March. But he didn’t rule out that a more aggressive approach was possible if the data evolves.

“If the data say that things have evolved in a way that a 50 basis point move is required or [would] be appropriate, then I’m going to lean into that . . . If moving in successive meetings makes sense, I’ll be comfortable with that,” Bostic said in the interview.

Bostic said he would be watching for a deceleration in monthly consumer price gains and whether higher wages are meaningfully boosting prices, according to the Financial Times.

After more aggressive inflation fighting comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell this past week, the market now expects the central bank to raise rates at least five times this year, up from four previously, according to fed funds futures.

It’s largely believed that those hikes will be in quarter-point increments though some in the market, including Bill Ackman, believe a half-point hike is needed to tame inflation cause the Fed is behind the curve. The Fed last raised rates by half of a point in May 2000.

Bostic rejected the idea that the Fed would raise rates too aggressively or in a damaging way, according to the report.

“Our policy path is not a constriction path. It’s a less accommodative path,” he told the paper. “If we do the three [interest rate increases] that I have in mind, that’ll still leave our policy in a very accommodative space.”

Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Cristiano Ronaldo upset about Portugal’s FIFA World Cup qualification campaign; Donny van de Beek set to join Everton, and more

Manchester United are working to trim their squad this month. The Red Devils have already sent Amad Diallo and Anthony Martial out on loan deals. A few more departures are expected before the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Fred has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is upset about Portugal not qualifying directly for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Elsewhere, Donny van de Beek is set to join Everton on loan for the rest of the season.

On that note, here’s a look at the key Manchester United transfer stories as on 30th January 2022.

Fred has said that his Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is upset about Portugal not qualifying directly for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 36-year-old could only help his side finish second in their World Cup qualification group behind Serbia. As such, Portugal will need to win two playoff games to secure qualification for the greatest sporting spectacle on earth.

They will have to overcome Turkey and then get the better of either Italy or North Macedonia. Understandably, Ronaldo is not impressed, but Fred says that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is determined to be at the event.

Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘VERY UPSET’ Portugal did not qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup according to teammate Fred trib.al/4uW90rt

Speaking in a recent interview, Fred is hopeful of the Portuguese’s participation at the World Cup.

“We talk a little bit about this. Of course, he (Cristiano Ronaldo) is very upset about not qualifying directly for the World Cup. But, as a great player and as their captain, he knows how to prepare his teammates in order to qualify. Obviously, he was very upset, but he will work hard to be at the World Cup,” said Fred.

“Everybody knows that he wants to win everything every time. So, rest assured, he will work hard to be at this World Cup,” continued Fred.

Ronaldo has appeared in four previous editions of the quadrennial competitions. If Portugal qualify for Qatar’ 22, it could be their captain’s last appearance in the tournament.

Everton have struck a deal with Manchester United to take Donny van de Beek on loan, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2020, but has failed to cement a place in the starting XI. The 24-year-old has struggled for chances under interim manager Ralf Rangnick as well.

He has made 50 appearances across competitions for the club, scoring two goals, since his arrival in the summer of 2020. However, most of them have come off the bench.

The Englishman’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season. Manchester United have failed to convince him to put pen to paper on a new contract. Lingard has now reportedly agreed personal terms for a six-month loan deal with the Magpies.

Newcastle United failed with an initial loan bid for the Englishman, but are expected to return with an improved offer. United could be willing to let Lingard leave, but might ask in excess of £10 million in loan fees for the player.

All About Kelly Hall – Hollywood Life

On the field, Matthew Stafford is a competitive quarterback, but off the field, he’s a family guy who’s dedicated to his wife, Kelly Hall, and their four children.

The road to the Super Bowl continues for Matthew Stafford, 33, and the Los Angeles Rams. The quarterback and his team will take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship on Jan. 30, with the winner heading to the Super Bowl on Feb .13. Matthew started his NFL career on the Detroit Lions, after being selected by the team in the 2009 NFL draft. He led the team to the playoffs in the 2011, 2014 and 2016 seasons, and mutually agreed to part ways with the program in 2021.

Matthew was traded to the Rams for the 2021 season, and it’s been quite a success so far. The Rams were the regular season NFC champs, and have a chance at heading to the Super Bowl if they beat the 49ers this weekend. Meanwhile, off the field, Matthew has happily been married to his wife, Kelly Hall, 32, since 2015. The couple have four children together, and Kelly and the kids have been his number one supporters throughout this NFL season. Learn more about Kelly and the pair’s marriage below:

How Did Matthew Stafford Meet His Wife?

Matthew and Kelly met when they were both attending the University of Georgia. Matthew was on the football team, and Kelly was a cheerleader, so it was truly a storybook match! Matthew graduated in 2009 and the two continued their relationship after school. Matthew proposed in July 2014, and he and Kelly got married on April 4, 2015. The wedding took place at the Foundry at Puritan Mill in Atlanta.

Matthew and Kelly’s wedding was very personalized, according to their wedding planner. She told The Knot that there was an “airbrush trucker hat station,” as well as a light-up dance floor for the after-party. Kelly wore a strapless white dress with a white floral design throughout and her bridesmaids wore navy blue.

How Is Matthew Stafford’s Wife’s Health?

In 2019, Kelly revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She explained that she had began experiencing vertigo in Jan. 2019, but her vitals and bloodwork all came back fine. After several more vertigo spells, she finally got an MRI, which revealed that she had a tumor sitting on her cranial nerves. “The medical term they used was an acoustic neuroma or vestibular schwannoma,” Kelly explained. The doctors recommended surgery to take out the tumor, and Kelly had the surgery in mid-April 2019.

The surgery took 12 hours, which was longer than expected, and the recovery was brutal. “The pain got so far ahead of me, I couldn’t keep anything down, including meds,” Kelly shared on April 24, 2019. “I ended up in the ER very early this morning, back on steroids and pain medication.” She continued to suffer from dizziness, nausea and headaches in the aftermath of the surgery. It was a slow and steady recovery, and Kelly has credited Matthew with helping her get through it. Thank you Matthew. Thank you for taking care of me and our family and always putting us first,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for always being my rock and keeping me at ease during the toughest time of my life.”

On the one year anniversary of her acoustic neuroma surgery, Kelly took to Instagram to reveal how grateful she was, despite all the “ups and downs” of the prior 12 months. “The hardest year of my life so far has passed,” she wrote. “I am looking forward to the years to come, knowing they might bring new challenges, but ready for those challenges, because not only do I know how strong I am, but more so how much stronger I am with my husband and kids by my side.” Today, Kelly is healthy.

Does Matthew Stafford Have A Son?

No, Matthew Stafford does not have a son. Matthew has FOUR children with Kelly, and they are all girls! As the ultimate girl dad, Matthew is father to twins Chandler Stafford and Sawyer Stafford, who were born in March 2017, as well as daughter, Hunter Stafford, born in August 2018, and Tyler Stafford, born in June 2020. Yes, their children are all just three years apart, so it’s definitely a hectic household! At first, Matthew and Kelly struggled to conceive a child, and Kelly underwent IVF in August 2016, which eventually led to the birth of their twins.

Like their mom, the Stafford girls are the ultimate fans of their dad. Throughout the most recent football season, Kelly has shared several photos of the little ones cheering on their dad in Rams gear. Whether they’re at the games or watching from home, they’re definitely a supportive bunch. It looks like baby Tyler will be the last addition to the family, though. After announcing her fourth pregnancy in 2020, Kelly confirmed, “We are done after this. Stafford party of 6 will stay a party of 6.”

Who Is Kelly Hall Related To?

Kelly’s parents are Leslie Hall and Jack Hall. She is their youngest child, and has two older siblings: Jennifer Hall and Chad Hall. Her brother, Chad, was also a football player. Chad played for the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs throughout his football career. He played his last NFL game in 2013, and joined the Buffalo Bills’ coaching staff in 2017. He began as an offensive assistant and is now the team’s Wide Receivers coach.

What Does Kelly Do?

After graduating from the University of Georgia, Kelly eventually began studying nursing. She passed her NCLEX test in 2014, confirming on Instagram that she was a Registered Nurse. Obviously, live got very busy for Kelly quickly after that. Now, she is the host of a podcast called The Morning After. “Something fun and stress free to listen to!” she wrote, in the podcast’s Instagram bio. “Hopefully you laugh and leave knowing that no one actually has their s*** together.” Kelly started the podcast in Sept. 2021 after Matthew’s first game with the Rams.

Scientists Solve The Century-Old Mystery of Why This Special Insect Can Float in Water

Apart from fish, scientists have found only one other animal that can regulate its buoyancy in the water using swim bladders, and it’s probably not what you were expecting.

The phantom midge is a type of lake fly (genus Chaoborus), but before it can take to the air, its larvae must first grow up in the water. Because these glass worms are see-through, we’ve known since 1911 that they contain two pairs of gas-filled sacs on either end of their body.

For more than a century, we had no idea how the insects controlled those strange organs. Now, a trick of the light has accidentally revealed the answer.

In 2018, zoologist Philip Matthews noticed a bunch of larvae swimming in a rain-filled cattle tank.

“These bizarre insects were floating neutrally buoyant in the water, which is something you just don’t see insects doing,” recalls Matthews.

“Some insects can become neutrally buoyant for a short time during a dive, but Chaoborus larvae are the only insects close to being neutrally buoyant.”

Unlike a fish, oxygen gas cannot be actively transported into the air-sacs of a phantom midge because insects don’t have enclosed circulatory systems with oxygen-transporting red blood cells like vertebrates.

So how do their organs inflate and deflate to achieve neutral buoyancy?

On a whim, Matthews took some of the larvae back to the lab and put them under a microscope. When he turned on ultraviolet light to illuminate the microscope’s stage, he noticed the air-sacs start to glow a bright blue.

The color suggested the sacs were made of a protein known as resilin, which has elastic, rubber-like qualities. In an alkaline setting, resilin is known to swell, but in a more acidic environment, the protein contracts.

To investigate further, Matthew’s PhD student and lead author of the new study Evan McKenzie began experimenting with the larvae’s actual air-sacs in the lab, artificially inflating and deflating them with acidic or alkaline exposures.

By doing so, McKenzie could indirectly push air in and out of the sacs.

“This is a really bizarre adaptation that we didn’t go looking for,” says Matthews.

“We were just trying to figure out how they can float in water without sinking.”

Instead, they found phantom midge larvae could sink, rise, or float simply by manipulating the pH of their air-sac walls. This then allows gas to passively diffuse in and out, without the need for oxygen-carrying blood to inflate or deflate the organs.

The whole process works like a mechanochemical engine, the authors say, “transforming pH changes into mechanical work against hydrostatic pressure.”

The motor is unlike anything else we’ve found in the animal kingdom, and it’s so easy to use that some phantom midges can travel very deep into the water.

In Lake Malawi in East Africa, for instance, one species of phantom midge (C. edulis) has actually been found more than 200 meters (656 feet) down, in a low oxygen environment perfect for evading predators.

The new research suggests these larvae don’t even have to swim to get there; all they have to do is sink.

The study was published in Current Biology.

Tom Brady Retires: Report – Hollywood Life

Tom Brady is reportedly retiring from the NFL after playing professionally for 22 years and becoming one of the most successful quarterbacks in football histroy.

Tom Brady, 44, is officially hanging up his helmet. The longtime NFL quarterback, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 after playing for the New England Patriots since 2000, is now retiring from the league, according to ESPN. Sources told the outlet that when Tom left the field after the Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week, he knew it was likely his final time playing professional football. Since then, he’s reportedly getting ready to announce his retirement and the next chapter of his life and career any day now.

Another insider EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife that Tom “is going to sign a one-day contract with the New England Patriots and officially announce his retirement likely early next week once New England gets over the blizzard that is happening right now.”

Sources further told ESPN that Tom’s reasons for retiring at this time include many things, including his family and health and an understanding that the Buccaneers are likely to go through a significant roster turnover. He has reportedly never wanted a “farewell” season and is not planning on upstaging the NFL’s post season games or Super Bowl by announcing his retirement around the same time. Sources also say that executives and coaches have been getting ready for Tom’s retirement since “all signs point” to it.

Although the Buccaneers apparently wanted Tom to play for one more year, his decision is leading them to accept what’s expected to be a challenging season ahead. As news of Tom’s reported retirement plans made their way around the internet, fans quickly took to social media to share messages of thanks to the legendary football player and also expressed sadness that he will no longer be lighting up their lives in new games in the NFL. Tom’ own company, TB12 also shared a message of thanks, further indicating that the retirement will soon be official.

The reported retirement news is hitting fans hard since Tom was rumored to be retiring from the NFL many times before, but he always debunked those claims. But he has yet to do that this time. Despite the bittersweet feelings, though, the skilled athlete has got to be proud of all that he’s achieved. He considered to be the NFL’s greatest quarterback of all time due to his many accomplishments and accolades over the years. He’s won seven Super Bowl titles and has been named the MVP three times.

Although Tom’s headline-making success didn’t come until he started playing for the Patriots in 2000, his history proves he always had the passion and skill to become a champion. He started out as a fan of the sport and went on to play college football for the University of Michigan from 1995 until 1999. Soon after that, he was selected to join the Patriots with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. After impressively playing for the New England team throughout his entire career as a professional, he set an NFL record for the longest time playing quarterback for one franchise. He also joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and helped take them to the Super Bowl in 2021. What a way to go out on top, right?

IPL 2022 Auction: “This player will certainly be picked”

Experienced Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has predicted that U19 all-rounder Rajvardhan Hangargekar could be picked by one of the IPL franchises at the 2022 mega auction. The veteran off-spinner said that Hangargekar has exceptional talent with both bat and ball.

The 19-year-old Hangargekar is currently part of India’s U19 World Cup 2022 squad in the West Indies. He has claimed five wickets with his medium pace so far, including 2-8 against Uganda. Hangargekar also smashed an unbeaten 39 off 17, with the aid of five sixes, in the clash against Ireland.

Discussing the youngster’s chances at the IPL 2022 mega auction, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel:

“This player will certainly be picked at the IPL auction. Which franchise I cannot predict, but he will surely be purchased. His name is Rajvardhan Hangargekar.”

Explaining the reason why he feels the player would be in demand, the 35-year-old added:

“He is a right-arm medium pacer, who can bowl the inswinger very well. Ishant Sharma is the only one who has the gift among present Indian right-arm pacers. Inswing can usually tuck in batters, which is why I feel he will be in demand.”

Ashwin also pointed out that Hangargekar’s big-hitting prowess with the willow would be an added advantage, stating:

“He is also a strong lower middle-order hitter. The power he generates when he hits the ball is incredible. He should attract at least 5-10 bids. Make sure to watch him out.”

Hangargekar claimed 1-19 from 7.1 overs in the U19 World Cup 2022 quarter-final against Bangladesh, where India bowled out their opponents for 111.

Ashwin played it safe with India U19 captain Yash Dhull while describing him as a highly talented batter, saying:

“Yash Dhull is a highly talented batter. Last time SRH picked up U19 skipper Priyam Garg. Will they do the same this time? We’ll have to wait and watch. DC has also backed a former U19 captain in Shaw.”

Dhull struck 82 in the Group B clash against South Africa before being forced to miss the next few games after contracting COVID-19.

“Each team has only eight overseas slots” – Ashwin discusses Dewald Brevis’ IPL chances

Apart from a few Indian youngsters, South Africa’s Dewald Brevis has also made a huge impression in the U19 World Cup 2022. Fondly called ‘Baby AB’, the 18-year-old Brevis is the leading run-scorer in the event so far, having smacked 362 runs in four innings at an average of 90.50 and a strike rate of 86.39.

Although Ashwin too has been highly impressed with the Proteas young gun’s batting exploits, he is unsure of Brevis bagging an IPL contract. The Indian legend elaborated:

“Dewald Brevis is being promoted a lot as Baby AB. He is playing sensationally, and people have started asking whether he can be picked in the IPL. But each team has only eight overseas slots.”

“Will it be worth giving one of those slots to an U19 overseas player is the big question for the franchises. So, despite him being termed Baby AB, I am not sure if he will get picked.”

Brevis, who has also claimed six wickets with his leg-spin, recently expressed his desire to represent Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL. In a video posted on ICC’s official website, the youngster also revealed that he is a big fan of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Sundar shares bald-headed picture on Instagram

Indian spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar posted a picture of himself on Instagram on Saturday in a completely new look, having shaved his head.

He is seen sitting on a large rock surrounded by trees in customary Tamil attire. He captioned the picture with a dialog from Indian star Rajnikant’s movie Shivaji:

“Chummaa athirudhilla”

It translates to:

“How well did I surprise everyone!” in English and “Kyu, hilla dala na” in Hindi

Indeed the all-rounder’s new bald look surprised everyone in the cricket fraternity as they started reacting with likes and comments on his post.

“Nice to see Washington Sundar in the squad, much deserved” – Yuvraj Singh

Washington Sundar found a place in the recently announced ODI and T20I squads against West Indies.

Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh took to Instagram to share his views around the team selection. The southpaw was happy with the selection of the all-rounder alongside several other youngsters.

He wrote:

“Nice to see Kuldeep Yadav, Washington, Deepak Hooda and Ruturaj’s name in the squad, much deserved!”

The all-rounder deservedly got his place in the squad back after recovering from a prolonged injury and then from COVID-19.

The all-rounder injured his finger while playing a county match on India’s tour to England during 2021. He subsequently missed the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore and also had to sit out the T20I World Cup in October 2021.

The 21-year-old was hit by Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, forcing him out of action for several months.

He was subsequently selected for the ODIs against South Africa, but he tested positive for COVID-19 infection and was replaced by Jayant Yadav.

With the absence of other spinning all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, he is expected to make a place in the starting XI.

ODIs will be held in Ahmedabad starting February 6.

F.B.I. Secretly Bought Israeli Spyware and Explored Hacking U.S. Phones

It is widely regarded as the world’s most potent spyware, capable of reliably cracking the encrypted communications of iPhone and Android smartphones.

The software, Pegasus, made by an Israeli company, NSO Group, has been able to track terrorists and drug cartels. It has also been used against human rights activists, journalists and dissidents.

Now, an investigation published Friday by The New York Times Magazine has found that Israel, which controls the export of the spyware, just as it does the export of conventional weapons, has made Pegasus a key component of its national security strategy, using it to advance its interests around the world.

The yearlong investigation, by Ronen Bergman and Mark Mazzetti, also reports that the F.B.I. bought and tested NSO software for years with plans to use it for domestic surveillance until the agency finally decided last year not to deploy the tools.

The Times found that sales of Pegasus played a critical role in securing the support of Arab nations in Israel’s campaign against Iran and negotiating the Abraham Accords, the 2020 diplomatic agreements, signed at a Trump White House ceremony, that normalized relations between Israel and some of its longtime Arab adversaries.

The U.S. had also moved to acquire Pegasus, The Times found. The F.B.I., in a deal never previously reported, bought the spyware in 2019, despite multiple reports that it had been used against activists and political opponents in other countries. It also spent two years discussing whether to deploy a newer product, called Phantom, inside the United States.

The discussions at the Justice Department and the F.B.I. continued until last summer, when the F.B.I. ultimately decided not to use NSO weapons.

But Pegasus equipment is still in a New Jersey building used by the F.B.I. And the company also gave the agency a demonstration of Phantom, which could hack American phone numbers.

A brochure for potential customers, obtained by The Times, says that Phantom allows American law enforcement and spy agencies to “turn your target’s smartphone into an intelligence gold mine.”

The yearlong Times investigation was based on interviews with government officials, leaders of intelligence and law enforcement agencies, cyber experts, business executives and privacy activists in a dozen countries.

It tells the story of NSO’s rise from a start-up operating out of a converted chicken coop on an agricultural cooperative to its blacklisting by the Biden administration in November because of its use by foreign governments to “maliciously target” dissidents, journalists and others.

NSO began with two school friends, Shalev Hulio and Omri Lavie, hatching start-ups in Bnai Zion, an agricultural cooperative outside of Tel Aviv, in the mid-2000s.

One of their start-ups, CommuniTake, which offered cellphone tech-support workers the ability to take control of their customers’ devices — with permission — caught the attention of a European intelligence agency, Mr. Hulio said.

NSO was born, and the company eventually developed a way to gain access to phones without the user’s permission — no need to click on a malicious attachment or link. (That the company’s name sounded like the N.S.A. was a mere coincidence).

After NSO began selling Pegasus globally in 2011, Mexican authorities used it to capture Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the drug lord known as El Chapo. And European investigators used it to smash a child-abuse ring with dozens of suspects in more than 40 countries.

But abuses have also been revealed in reports by researchers and news organizations, including The Times.

Mexico used the spyware to target journalists and dissidents. Saudi Arabia used it against women’s rights activists and associates of Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist who was killed and dismembered by Saudi operatives in 2018.

That year, the C.I.A. bought Pegasus to help Djibouti, an American ally, fight terrorism, despite longstanding concerns about human rights abuses there, including the persecution of journalists and the torture of dissidents.

In the U.A.E., Pegasus was used to hack the phone of an outspoken critic of the government, Ahmed Mansoor.

Mr. Mansoor’s email account was breached, his geolocation was monitored, $140,000 was stolen from his bank account, he was fired from his job and strangers beat him on the street.

“You start to believe your every move is watched,” he said. In 2018, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for posts he made on Facebook and Twitter.

Through a series of new deals licensed by the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Pegasus has been provided to the far-right leaders of Poland, Hungary, India and other countries.

Mr. Netanyahu did not order the Pegasus system to be cut off, even when the Polish government enacted laws that many Jews inside and outside of Israel saw as Holocaust denial, or when Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, at a conference attended by Mr. Netanyahu himself, falsely listed “Jewish perpetrators” among those responsible for the Holocaust.

American companies have been trying to build their own tools that could hack phones with the ease of NSO’s “zero click” technology.

One of those companies, Boldend, told Raytheon, the defense-industry giant, in January 2021, that it could hack WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Facebook, but then lost the capability after a WhatsApp update, according to a presentation obtained by The Times.

The claim was especially notable because, according to one of the slides, a major Boldend investor is Founders Fund — a company run by Peter Thiel, the billionaire who was one of Facebook’s first investors and remains on its board.

The recent American blacklisting of NSO could suffocate the company by denying it access to the American technology it needs to run its operations, including Dell computers and Amazon cloud servers.

The rebuke has infuriated Israeli officials who have denounced the move as an attack not only on a crown jewel of the country’s defense industry but on the country itself.

“The people aiming their arrows against NSO,” said Yigal Unna, director general of the Israel National Cyber Directorate until Jan. 5, “are actually aiming at the blue and white flag hanging behind it.”
