New York may use national guard to replace unvaccinated health workers | New York

The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, is considering using the national guard and out-of-state medical workers to fill hospital staffing shortages, as tens of thousands of workers are unlikely to meet a Monday deadline for mandated Covid-19 vaccination.

The plan, outlined in a statement, would allow the governor to declare a state of emergency and thereby increase the supply of healthcare workers to include licensed professionals from other states and countries as well as retired nurses.

Hochul said the state was also looking at using national guard officers with medical training to keep hospitals and other medical facilities adequately staffed.

Some 16% of the state’s 450,000 hospital staff, or roughly 70,000 workers, have not been fully vaccinated, the governor’s office said.

“We are still in a battle against Covid to protect our loved ones,” Hochul said.

“I commend all of the healthcare workers who have stepped up to get themselves vaccinated, and I urge all remaining healthcare workers who are unvaccinated to do so now so they can continue providing care.”

The plan comes amid a broader battle between state and federal government leaders pushing for vaccine mandates to help counter the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus and workers who are against inoculation requirements, some on religious grounds.

On Sunday, Hochul attended a service at a large church in New York City, to ask Christians to help promote vaccines.

“I need you to be my apostles. I need you to go out and talk about it and say, we owe this to each other,” Hochul told congregants at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn.

“Jesus taught us to love one another and how do you show that love but to care about each other enough to say, please get the vaccine because I love you and I want you to live.”

Healthcare workers who are fired for refusing to get vaccinated will not be eligible for unemployment insurance unless they are able to provide a valid doctor-approved request for medical accommodation, Hochul’s office said.

It was not immediately clear how pending legal cases concerning religious exemptions would apply to the state’s plan to move ahead and fire unvaccinated healthcare workers.

A federal judge in Albany temporarily ordered New York state officials to allow religious exemptions for the state-imposed vaccine mandate on healthcare workers, which was put in place by former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

A requirement for New York City school teachers and staff to get vaccinated was temporarily blocked by a US appeals court just days before it was to take effect. A hearing is set for Wednesday.

The highly transmissible Delta variant has driven a surge in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in the US that peaked in early September and has since fallen, according to a Reuters tally. Deaths, a lagging indicator, continue to rise with the US reporting about 2,000 on average a day for the past week, mostly in the unvaccinated.

While nationally cases are down about 25% from their autumn peak, rising new infections in New York have only recently leveled off.

In an attempt to better protect the most vulnerable, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday backed a booster shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for Americans aged 65 and older, adults with underlying medical conditions and adults in high-risk working and institutional settings.

On Sunday the CDC director, Dr Rochelle Walensky, fleshed out who should be eligible for the booster shots based on their work in high-risk settings.

“That includes people in homeless shelters, people in group homes, people in prisons, but also importantly, our people who work … with vulnerable communities,” Walensky told CBS’s Face the Nation. “So our healthcare workers, our teachers, our grocery workers, our public transportation employees.”

Walensky decided to include a broader range of people than was recommended on Thursday by a group of expert outside advisers to the agency. The CDC director is not obliged to follow the advice of the panel.

As Covid Wave Pushes Up Demand, Costco Limits Purchases of Toilet Paper and Water

Last year, a frantic run on toilet paper that left store shelves bare across the United States became a symbol of the panic that seized Americans in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, at least one big-box retailer is trying to prevent a repeat of that frenzy as the Delta variant has driven caseloads higher in many parts of the country.

The retailer, Costco, which is known for its bargains on bulk food and cleaning supplies, confirmed in a fourth-quarter earnings call on Thursday that it was “putting some limitations on key items” such as toilet paper, cleaning products and Kirkland Signature water.

The company did not specify what those limits were, but Richard A. Galanti, the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Costco, pointed to “the uptick in Delta-related demand.”

He said that supply chains had also been affected by “port delays; container shortages; Covid disruptions; shortages on various components, raw materials and ingredients; labor cost pressures, and trucker and driver shortages.”

“A year ago, there was a shortage of merchandise,” Mr. Galanti said, according to a transcript of the call posted on The Motley Fool website. “Now they’ve got plenty of merchandise, but there’s two- or three-week delays on getting it delivered.”

To keep store shelves filled, Costco has been “ordering as much as we can and getting it in earlier,” Mr. Galanti said. The company has chartered three ocean vessels to transport containers between Asia and the United States and Canada, he said. Each ship can carry 800 to 1,000 containers at a time.

Musk praises China, says Tesla will expand investments in country

Elon Musk, founder and chief engineer of SpaceX speaks at the 2020 Satellite Conference and Exhibition March 9, 2020 in Washington, DC. Musk answered a range of questions relating to SpaceX projects during his appearance at the conference.

Elon Musk reassured Tesla’s commitment to China, saying the automaker will continue to expand its investments in the country.

Musk’s comments came in a pre-recorded question-and-answer style stream at the World Internet Conference, hosted by the Cyberspace Administration of China.

It’s the second time this month Musk was highly complimentary of the nation that’s imperative to his electric vehicle company, saying it’s a “global leader digitalization.” Less than two weeks ago, Musk, during another pre-recorded stream at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress, said Chinese automakers were the “most competitive in the world.”

“My frank observation is that China spends a lot of resources and efforts applying the latest digital technologies in different industries, including the automobile industry, making China a global leader in digitalization,” Musk said in the latest video. “Tesla will continue to expand our investment and R&D efforts in China.”

Tesla has been trying to improve its reputation in China after a slew of negative press. The company has faced regulatory scrutiny around its privacy and a handful of recalls in China. Beijing had reportedly restricted or banned the use of Tesla’s electric vehicles by some state and military personnel.

Musk called out data protection in his speech, specifying what types of data are stored locally.

“At Tesla, we are glad to see a number of laws and regulations that have been released to strengthen data management,” Musk said.

“Tesla has set up a data center in China to localize all data generated from our business here, including production, sales, service and charging. All personally identifiable information is security stores in China without being transferred overseas. Only in very rare cases, for example, spare parts orders from overseas is data approved for transfer internationally.”

The company broke ground on a major Shanghai factory in 2019. Tesla sold 44,264 China-made vehicles in August, including 31,379 for export. It was an increase from the 32,968 China-made vehicles sold in July and 33,155 units sold in June.

Seth Rollins on Triple H almost firing him from WWE

Seth Rollins has disclosed details about the time that Triple H threatened to fire him from WWE if his attitude did not improve.

Before joining WWE’s main roster, Rollins worked for the company’s FCW and NXT developmental systems between August 2010 and November 2012. During that time, he often clashed with NXT trainer Terry Taylor over their views of modern-day wrestling styles.

Speaking on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions, Rollins recalled how NXT founder Triple H took exception to his backstage behavior at the time.

“Terry is very old school in the sense that he thinks a certain way works, and part of that ideology is sort of shunning what is up and coming instead of embracing it,” said Rollins. “And I was always like, ‘Hey, the business is changing. You’ve gotta go with it. If you go against it, it’s not gonna help.’ I would just challenge him in little ways every day to the point where I was insubordinate, and Hunter [Triple H] took me aside and was like, ‘Look, I don’t see anything special in you….”

Rollins added that Triple H was happy to let him leave WWE’s developmental system if he did not “play ball” with NXT’s coaches. Another former trainer, Joey Mercury, also told Rollins that he needed to learn “how to play the game” in order to succeed in WWE.

Seth Rollins asked Triple H to make him NXT Champion

In August 2012, Seth Rollins defeated Jinder Mahal in the final of the NXT Gold Rush Tournament to become the inaugural NXT Champion.

Reflecting on that memorable moment, the former Shield member said he made amends with Triple H and approached his boss about being the title’s first holder.

“Three months later, I’m sitting in a room with Hunter and I’m saying, ‘I want that NXT Championship,'” Rollins continued. “‘I wanna be the first one to hold that title. Put it on me and this brand is off and running. If it goes another direction with it, then I don’t know where you’re gonna be in a couple of years.’ And I told him that. I said, ‘I’m the right guy for this. You know that, I know that. Let’s bury this hatchet and let’s make this work.”

Rollins went on to work alongside Triple H for several years on WWE’s main roster as a member of The Authority. He also defeated the 14-time World Champion at WrestleMania 33 in 2017.

Tom Fletcher and Strictly partner test positive for Covid | Strictly Come Dancing

The Strictly Come Dancing contestant Tom Fletcher and his professional partner, Amy Dowden, have tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss next Saturday’s live show, the BBC has said.

Fletcher, one of the lead vocalists from McFly, and Dowden had performed well in their first dance during this weekend’s show.

The news of their illness follows reports that three of the show’s dancers had not been vaccinated, though there is no suggestion that either Fletcher or Dowden were among them.

Singer, songwriter and author Fletcher had danced the cha-cha to Earth, Wind & Fire’s September in his Strictly debut. He and Dowden were the first to dance and were awarded 21 out of 40 by the judges.

The BBC said an average audience of 7.9 million tuned in on Saturday night to watch the couples compete.

Fletcher and Dowden, who reached the final of Strictly in 2019 with the TV presenter Karim Zeroual, were expected to return the following week “all being well”, said the BBC.

A statement from the broadcaster said: “The pair are now self-isolating separately following the latest government guidelines.

“While they will both miss Saturday’s live show, Strictly Come Dancing protocols mean that, all being well, they will return the following week.”

Last year, the boxer Nicola Adams and her dance partner, Katya Jones – the show’s first same-sex couple – were forced to pull out of the series further into its run after Jones tested positive for Covid-19.

The series has been engulfed in controversy in recent weeks after unconfirmed reports that some of the dancers had not been vaccinated.

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, had even commented on the debate, stating that he “does not mind lecturing” the Strictly professional dancers in urging them to get a Covid jab.

The BBC had denied that three professional dancers had said they would quit the show rather than get vaccinated, but refused to comment on whether anyone had or had not received the vaccine.

A spokesperson for the show had said: “We do not comment on speculation of somebody’s Covid vaccination status.

“Strictly Come Dancing production has, and will, continue to follow strict government guidelines to ensure the safety of all on the show.”

Costco Limits Purchases of Toilet Paper, Water Amid Covid Surge

CDC director on whether kids should go trick-or-treating on Halloween

NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 31: A child dressed as Wonder Woman for Halloween at Fort Green Park on October 31, 2020 in New York City. The CDC shared on their website alternative ways to still celebrate the holiday while being safe. (Photo by David Dee Delgado/Getty Images)

David Dee Delgado | Getty Images News | Getty Images

Kids should be able to go trick-or-treating this Halloween with a couple of caveats, Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Sunday.

“I certainly hope so,” Walensky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” when asked whether it’s safe for children to go trick-or-treating this year. “If you’re able to be outdoors, absolutely,” she said.

The head of the CDC also recommended that parents and kids “limit crowds” on Halloween.

“I wouldn’t necessarily go to a crowded Halloween party, but I think that we should be able to let our kids go trick-or-treating in small groups,” Walensky said. “I hope that we can do that this year.”

On Monday, Pfizer and BioNTech announced a smaller dose of their Covid-19 vaccine is safe and generates a “robust” immune response in a clinical trial of kids ages 5 to 11.

Pfizer CEO and Chairman Albert Bourla said the data would be presented to the Food and Drug Administration soon.

“It’s a question of days, not weeks,” Bourla said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

“Then it is up to FDA to be able to review the data, and come to their conclusions, and approve it or not,” Bourla said. “If they approve it, we will be ready with our manufacturing to provide this new formulation of the vaccine.”

The vaccine for kids age 5 to 11 is “one-third of the dose that we are giving to the rest of the population.”

In the meantime, as schools are mostly back in session, the CDC’s Walensky told “This Week” that kids who get the coronavirus are, primarily, not getting it while they are at school.

“Our science has actually demonstrated that the disease generally comes in from the community,” Walensky said. “When schools are practicing a proper mitigation and prevention strategy, it is not where their transmission is actually happening.”

If proper safety precautions are not happening at schools, then transmission is much higher, the CDC chief said.

Most schools, 96%, have stayed open this school year, Walensky said.

“And yet, we also published a study out of Arizona that demonstrated that places that had no masks in place were three and a half times more likely to have outbreaks than places that did have masks in place,” Walensky said.

“We know how to keep them safe,” Walensky said. “And when we don’t use the proper mitigation strategies, they’re more likely to have outbreaks and have to close.”

Olivia Rodrigo looked so grown up when she stepped out at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opening gala in a black dress with a high slit.

Olivia Rodrigo is a total fashionista! The 18-year-old Disney star has already proved she can sing, dance, and act, now it seems she’s adding ‘fashion girl’ to that growing resume. After stepping out in a slew of gorgeous looks at The Met Gala, and the Video Music Awards just last week, she put on a sleek display as she walked the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opening gala on September 25. Olivia opted for a strapless black gown, which featured a plunging neckline and a high slit.

She also accessorized with black pumps and pulled her raven tresses back into a low bun, with a few loose strands framing her face. The “Good 4 U” chart topper added a red lip shade, which totally elevated the elegant look, as she walked the carpet at the museum opening. Other stars who attended the high-profile gala included Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Regina King, Laura Dern, Anna Kendrick, Kate Hudson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cher, and Queen Latifah.

While the A-listers got a peek at what’s on display inside, members of the public will be able to visit starting on September 30.  As fans would know, the outing comes a couple of weeks after Olivia donned a different black outfit at the Met Gala. The “driver’s license” star made her first-ever appearance at the 2021 event, and slayed in a sheer lace catsuit designed by Saint Laurent. It featured feather detailing around her shoulders, and she pulled hair back in a sleek pony, while adding dangling silver earrings for fashion’s biggest night.

It was a busy week for the pop star, who also had a huge night at the VMAs. In addition to performing her hit song “good 4 u,” Olivia walked away as the winner of multiple awards, including Best New Artist. She said this past year has been the “most magical year of my life.”

During one acceptance speech, she gave a shoutout to “all of the other girls who write songs on their bedroom floor. There are a lot of people who will try to dim your light, but speaking your mind and sharing your heart are the most beautiful things in the world.” We can’t wait to see what she does next!

I was wondering if we would meet again,” Anthony begins during the chance outdoor meeting. “So you might discern if my wit is acceptable, if my manners genteel?” Kate retorts back, revealing she had been eavesdropping on the Bridgerton earlier in the evening. “It was hardly an effort since you were proclaiming your requirements for a wife loud enough for the entire party to hear…I take issue with any man who sees women merely as chattels and breeding stock…are the women of London so easily won by a pleasing smile?” she defiantly continues. “So you find my smile pleasing?” he inquires, as the scene ends. We can’t wait for more!

While the first season focused on Simon and Daphne’s love story, Bridgerton season 2 will follow the books and explore Anthony Bridgerton’s love story with Kate. The second season is based on Julia Quinn’s The Viscount Who Loved Me.

Kate Sharma will be played by Sex Education alum Simone Ashley. Kate comes into the picture when Anthony intends to marry her younger sister, Edwina. However, sparks fly between Kate and Anthony when these two cross paths in one unforgettable love story.

Most of the original cast members will be returning for season 2, including Jonathan Bailey, Phoebe Dynevor, and Nicola Coughlan. However, there will be one major character missing: Regé-Jean Page’s the Duke of Hastings.

“While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” Netflix announced in April 2021. “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer — more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

Phoebe Dynevor

There’s plenty of Bridgerton on the way after season 2. Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4. There could end up being 8 seasons since that’s how many books comprise Julia’s Bridgerton series. Honestly, the more the merrier!

Five cost of living crises facing the government | Politics

1 Gas prices

The cost of natural gas has quadrupled in four months, but energy companies cannot pass on the increase to customers because prices are capped by the government. The price cap will go up by an average of £139 in October, but dozens of smaller suppliers are expected to go out of business. When the cap is reviewed in April next year, it may go up by another £200 or more, some analysts believe. Gas costs are unlikely to fall for months, so heavy industry firms will face higher costs, and the UK is no longer part of the EU’s energy market which allows for simple cross-border trading of energy to keep prices more stable.

2 Universal credit

Ministers plan to cut the £20 Covid boost to the basic £118 a week Universal Credit (UC) payment on 6 October. Income tax, national insurance and the UC taper that means claimants receive only 37p for every £1 earned – as little as £2.24 per hour – meaning that someone working full time on the minimum wage would need to find about an extra day’s work each week to make up the shortfall, according to the Resolution Foundation, pushing 800,000 into poverty.

A potential backbench revolt has forced ministers to look at other options, but plans to tweak the UC taper would mean that £6bn cut would only be reduced to £5bn.

3 Inflation

The combination of product shortages, labour shortages and energy price rises will combine to push inflation above 4% for the first time since 2013, according to the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee. In March, the rate stood at 0.7%.

Interest rates remain at an all-time low of 0.1%, but even a small rise could be ruinous for millions of people – the average debt burden per household is £62,705, according to the Money Charity.

4 Deliveries

A lack of delivery drivers and HGV drivers, as well as other workers in warehouses and food processing plants has led to shortages of products on supermarket shelves and in supplies of diesel and petrol. Retailers’ stock levels are at their lowest since 1983, and levels of imports have plunged, down 17% in August according to the Confederation of British Industry. Business confidence had been rising due to optimism about a post-Covid recovery, but the CBI’s director-general Tony Danker said yesterday the mood had “changed from growing to coping”.

5 Furlough

The pandemic furlough scheme ends on 30 September and between 1.3m to 1.7m remain on full or partial furlough, according to ONS figures. Businesses will either make furloughed workers redundant or need to bring them back on to staff.

Demand for workers is at a record high, with 223,000 new job ads posted in the week ending 19 September, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. But even with labour shortages, there is likely to be a mismatch between any newly unemployed people and their skills for available jobs.

Millions to vote as Angela Merkel’s era ends

Millions of Germans are heading to the polls on Sunday in an election that will change the face of Germany, and Europe, as Chancellor Angela Merkel prepares to leave office after 16 years in power.

Voting in polling stations across Germany takes place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time, but many have cast their votes already via postal ballots. Exit polls giving an indication of the election result will be released shortly after the polls close.

Recent German elections have failed to throw up any real surprises and Merkel’s re-election was usually assured. Since announcing she would step down, however, the election race has been wide open with voters forced to look elsewhere for new leadership.

Voter polls in the run-up to the Sept. 26 vote have fascinated pundits and the public alike. The Green Party enjoyed a bounce in popularity and took the lead in the polls at one point in April to then be overtaken by the Social Democratic Party, which has managed to hang on to a slight lead in recent weeks.

In the meantime, Merkel’s ruling conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union has failed to break away from the pack and recent opinion polls have seen the party trailing in second place behind the SPD.

Still, the vote is too close to call with polls in the last week putting the SPD with 25% of the vote and the CDU-CSU with around 22%, while the Green Party is seen with around 16%.

Further behind lies the pro-business, liberal Free Democratic Party with 11%, with the right-wing Alternative for Germany seen with the same vote share. The far-left Die Linke party is seen with 6% of the vote.

The contenders

German voters are known to favor stability over charismatic leadership, with Merkel in power for 16 years and presiding over what many Germans have seen as the country’s “golden age.”

Olaf Scholz, the SPD’s candidate for chancellor, is likely to have benefitted from this preference for a “safe pair of hands” in power, given that he has been Germany’s finance minister and vice chancellor in the current government given the SPD’s role in the current coalition with the CDU-CSU.

The other candidates for chancellor — the CDU-CSU’s Armin Laschet and the Green Party’s Annalena Baerbock — have seen more mediocre successes during their election campaigns with both of them hit by several controversies and questions over their suitability to lead.

The CDU’s Laschet, in particular, has seen his ratings dive due to a disappointing campaign trail and lackluster performance on the public stage. Being caught on camera laughing during a visit to a German town hit by devastating floods, for which he later apologized, did nothing to boost his public persona either.

Three TV debates between the leading candidates have failed to translate into a reversal of the CDU-CSU’s popularity, despite outgoing Merkel trying to revive Laschet’s chances of succeeding her.

The CDU, and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, have dominated German politics since 1949, when the parties formed a parliamentary group and ran in the first federal election following World War II.

In recent years the party has fallen out of favor with younger German voters who are prioritizing green policies and want to see Germany invest in and modernize its creaking industries and infrastructure. In the last election in 2017, the CDU-CSU suffered its worst election result since 1949. Although the bloc won 33% of the vote, that itself was down from 41.5% in the previous election in 2013.

Coalition ahead

The 2021 vote is again more unpredictable for a variety of factors, such as the split in the votes that signals no obvious winner, and the amount of mail-in votes expected this year.

Mail-in voting was already common in Germany before the pandemic but election organizers expect as many as 50% mail-in ballots this time around, up from 28.6% in the 2017 election, given the Covid-19 situation, Deutsche Welle reported.

What’s certain is that the next government will be a coalition, with no one party expected to gain enough seats to govern alone. Analysts have spent many months speculating on what form a coalition government could take, and whether the CDU-CSU could find itself in opposition after many years in power. Coalition talks in any case are likely to take weeks, and potentially months.

“Each of the two major parties (the SPD and CDU/CSU) could form a coalition with the Greens and the center-right Liberals (FDP),” Carsten Nickel, deputy director of research at Teneo Intelligence, said in a note Wednesday.

“A left-of-center government of SPD, the Greens, and the post-communist Left (Die Linke) – and perhaps even another grand coalition of SPD and CDU/CSU – might also be possible numerically, but will not be the first choice,”

“Party leaderships will assess the official results in meetings on Monday morning, formally offering exploratory talks to potential coalition partners. These talks, as well as subsequent coalition negotiations, might take several weeks, given the likely need to forge an untested three-way coalition. As in 2017, coalition negotiations could still fail at a late stage, necessitating the search for alternative combinations,” Nickel noted.

Factors to watch will be whether the slight improvement in the polls for CDU-CSU turns into some last-minute momentum on election day, Nickel said, as well as how the Greens fare.

“Since Annalena Baerbock fell back into third place, she has put in solid performances in the TV debates, presenting herself as an alternative to her two male contenders wrangling with each other; combined with the expected high turnout in cities and via postal ballot, the Greens’ result could potentially still surprise.”

The economy

As for the economy, Europe’s largest, whoever takes the helm at the chancellery will have challenges on their hands, Barclays’ Macro Research Analyst Mark Cus Babic noted Thursday.

“A robust economic recovery is underway and the short-term outlook remains solid, in our view, irrespective of the election outcome but with the drawdown of pandemic savings and supply disruptions as key risks. However, several challenges loom. The medium-term outlook will depend on how the new government tackles them,” he said.

Journalists and party members watch on a screen from the press centre (L-R) Olaf Scholz, German Finance Minister, Vice-Chancellor and the Social Democrats (SPD) candidate for Chancellor and Armin Laschet, North Rhine-Westphalia’s State Premier and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate for Chancellor as they attend an election TV debate in Berlin on September 12.

“Germany faces key challenges such as implementing and paying for the green transition, the need for digital transformation, a rapidly ageing population, sluggish productivity growth, and reliance on exports, including to China.”

Whether Germany remains the engine of European growth will likely depend on economic policies that the next German government puts in place to overcome these key challenges, Cus Babic noted. “Uncertainty on the outcome of the elections is high, with polls suggesting the new German government will likely be a three-party coalition whose economic policy agenda will be defined during the coalition talks, with the first consequences materialising from 2023.”
