Stormi & Dad Travis Scott Throw Water Balloons At Kylie Jenner: Video – Hollywood Life

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott have reunited for a play date with Stormi, and the cosmetics mogul documented the trio’s Memorial Day water balloon fight.

Kylie Jenner, 23, and Travis Scott, 29, have reunited on Memorial Day Weekend for some fun in the sun with their daughter Stormi, 3. The trio proved they were ready for summer when they got together at Kylie’s mansion in Calabasas for a friendly water balloon fight next to a white jumping castle. In a series of Instagram Stories shared by the cosmetics mogul on May 31, little Stormi was seen rocking a bright yellow Fendi dress, which retails for around $500, with side cut-outs on her waist and matching sandals. Talk about a fashionista in the making!

“Love this little baby,” Kylie captioned a clip of her mini-me walking into the house. When the mother-daughter duo were joined by the “Sicko Mode” rapper, the cosmetics queen was heard saying, “Don’t throw it at me,” as Travis and Stormi teamed up to throw blue water balloons at the reality star. “You can’t get me now,” she was heard saying in a subsequent clip, as she hid behind a glass wall.

The family play date comes one day after the trio hit up Target before spending some time at a playground in the evening. The AstroWorld rapper shared a flirty moment with his ex, whom he split from in 2019, while on a Hold-N-Spin! Kylie and Travis were both laughing away as they lifted their feet off the ground, allowing the contraption to pick up speed.

The on again/off again couple, who welcomed their adorable daughter in 2018, recently sparked romance after an outing to Disneyland on May 18. The pair were spotted with Stormi and her cousi Dream Kardashian, 4. The foursome appeared to have a fun time time at the happiest place on Earth, going on classic rides like the Alice in Wonderland tea cups and Snow White’s Enchanted Wish!

Shortly after the theme park outing, reports surfaced that the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was in an “open relationship” with the rapper, which she flatly denied. “You guys really just make up anything,” Kylie tweeted on May 21, along with a screenshot of a tabloid news report. “I’m not discrediting anyone who is in an open relationship but it’s just careless and disrespectful to throw this narrative out there without knowing what’s true,” the Kylie Skin CEO also noted.

We healthcare workers steel ourselves for a battle we hope does not return to Victoria’s hospitals | Stephen Parnis

Lockdown. The word triggers anxiety among millions of Victorians, and with good reason.

We endured 112 days of it last winter, when we stared down our second wave. In that time, thousands were infected by Covid, and hundreds died. While we became the only place in the world to successfully turn such a major outbreak into community elimination, the scars remain.

After months of relative freedom, where news of the pandemic was largely restricted to international news feeds, the last few days have hit Melbourne hard. Community cases – the first here in almost three months – originated from a breach in South Australian hotel quarantine, and we are now paying the price: hundreds of exposure sites, thousands of close contacts and back into lockdown.

We have been here before. Victorians know the drill, but that does not make it any easier.

Some things make coping harder, like the bitter knowledge that so much of this was preventable.

For many months, my medical colleagues and I have warned of the risks that could jeopardise our safety in Australia. We said that hotel quarantine was not going to prevent outbreaks, and that broad acre solutions like Howard Springs were essential. But the response from Canberra has been tepid and slow.

Even more alarming have been Australia’s disastrous delays in getting vaccinated. We have suffered from haphazard supply, a distorted view of vaccine risk, high rates of vaccine hesitancy, an unjustified sense of complacency, and a woeful public education effort.

As result, our community remains highly vulnerable to a third wave.

The most distressing revelation of all has been evidence of Covid cases among staff and residents in private nursing homes once again. Too many of our frail elderly remain unvaccinated, and staff have been required to fend for themselves in getting vaccinations – a reprehensible state of affairs, after all we saw, all they suffered in 2020. It seems that we have not learned the lessons we should have.

Anxiety is growing across Melbourne and Victoria, as we all isolate and absorb what could happen in the weeks ahead. Already, it looks like the seven-day lockdown will have to be extended.

As healthcare workers, we are steeling ourselves for a battle we fervently hope does not return to our hospitals and clinics. Elective surgery has been curtailed, PPE drills are back, visitors are denied the opportunity to visit their loved ones and supplies are being stockpiled.

Right now, we are not the frontline.

The frontlines are our public health teams, who are undertaking the herculean task of testing, tracing and isolating many thousands of Victorians. If they are overwhelmed, then cases will grow exponentially, and we will again see severely ill Covid patients presenting to our emergency departments, struggling to breathe and needing intensive care.

It’s a dangerous and worrying time in Victoria.

As I said in 2020, we count on our training, and even children know about hand washing and social distancing these days.

We count on our colleagues, because healthcare is always a team sport, and we have already set many of the benchmarks for the care of Covid patients.

We count on the Victorian and Australian community, to continue to get tested in their tens of thousands every day, to get vaccinated at the first opportunity.

And we must count on each other to look after each other until that distant day when Covid-19 is no longer a threat.

China’s Beidou gains market share, challenges U.S.’ GPS

China is set to become a major player in the “highly lucrative” satellite navigation market, as it seeks to compete with the U.S. government-owned Global Positioning System (GPS), an analyst said Monday.

But China’s homegrown Beidou system is not likely to overtake the GPS system for now, said Craig Singleton, adjunct fellow at the hawkish Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

“China has marked a major step in its race to increase market share in this highly lucrative sector,” Singleton told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia.”

“The completion of the system also reaffirms China’s status as a world power. It represents a major declaration about its technical independence from the West, which carries wide-ranging geopolitical implications,” said Singleton.

More than 120 countries — including Pakistan and Thailand — are using China’s Beidou system for purposes such as monitoring traffic at ports or guiding rescue operations, the analyst said.

And Beijing is counting on its massive Belt and Road Initiative to “convince” more countries to use Beidou, he added.

The Beidou system was completed in June last year. Chinese state media Xinhua said last week that the value of Beidou-related industries will exceed 1 trillion yuan ($157.1 billion) by 2025.

‘Bifurcated world’

Singleton said Beidou’s completion has rekindled concerns among some in the West about the privacy and security of Chinese technology. He explained that some people fear Beijing could use its technology to track individuals, such as dissidents or democracy activists.

Such concerns have come as U.S.-China competition heats up in the technology space. The U.S. under former President Donald Trump introduced export controls on several Chinese tech companies, including telecommunications equipment maker Huawei and top chipmaker SMIC, or Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.

President Joe Biden has kept many Trump-era restrictions on Chinese companies. Biden is seeking to boost investments in U.S. research and development so that his country can build tech capabilities to compete with China.

Judging by the available gameplay footage, the Legion of the Dead mode’s objective is fairly straightforward: play as a team, find supply packages and reach the extraction point. Along the way, players must use their abilities and ammunition wisely as a horde of zombies will hunt them down through the streets of London.

Speaking about the thought process and creative vision behind the mode, Watch Dogs: Legion’s online director Jean-Pascal Cambiotti had this to say:

“I think there’s something inherently fun about playing with zombies, beyond the instant gratification of destroying them. We were inspired by the multiple portrayals of zombies across popular culture, and in the game, we made the decision to make zombies slower but lethal. They can be used as a gameplay tool to create chaos by luring them into fortified Albion layouts while you sneak in and save your precious ammo for another fight.”

In this game mode, players are tasked with more tactical and team-based responsibilities as they’re forced to rely on each other to make it out alive.

The few confirmed abilities that will be available when the mode launches on June 1st are:

Combat Spider-Bot+turret

It is unclear whether the DLC is free or if players must pay to access the new content that will drop on June 1st.

We Finally Have a Simple System For Naming All The Concerning COVID-19 Variants

COVID-19 variants are to be known by letters of the Greek alphabet to avoid stigmatizing nations where they were first detected, the World Health Organization announced Monday.

The new system applies to variants of concern – the most troubling of which four are in circulation – and the second-level variants of interest being tracked.

“They will not replace existing scientific names, but are aimed to help in public discussion,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead.

Under the new system, the variants of concern take on the following names: the hitherto so-called British variant B.1.1.7 becomes Alpha; the B.1.351 first discovered in South Africa becomes Beta, while the Brazilian P.1 becomes Gamma.

The so-called Indian variant B.1.617 is split into sub-lineages, of which the B.1.617.2 variant of concern becomes Delta.

The B.1.617.1 variant of interest is called Kappa.

Besides these names, there are two other scientific names in use for each mutation, while different geographic names have been used to describe the same variant.

For example, within Britain, what other countries have been referring to as the British variant is often called the Kent variant – the county in southeast England where it was first discovered.

The lineage names such as B.1.1.7.2 will still continue to be used in scientific circles, for the mutation information that their name conveys.

Stigmatizing and discriminatory

“While they have their advantages, these scientific names can be difficult to say and recall, and are prone to misreporting,” the WHO said in a statement.

“As a result, people often resort to calling variants by the places where they are detected, which is stigmatizing and discriminatory.

“To avoid this and to simplify public communications, WHO encourages national authorities, media outlets and others to adopt these new labels.”

No country should be stigmatized for detecting and reporting variants.

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden signed a hate crimes law aimed at protecting Asian Americans who have suffered a surge in attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

US anti-extremism groups say the number of attacks and hate crimes against Asian Americans has exploded since the beginning of the crisis.

They lay some of the blame with former president Donald Trump, who repeatedly referred to COVID-19 as the “China virus”.

The WHO has been trying to come up with simplified new nomenclature for the variants for several months.

The Greek alphabet contains 24 letters but there is no plan yet as to where to go next if they are exhausted.

Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta and Iota have already been ascribed to variants of interest.

Singapore-based D2C dental brand Zenyum raises $40M Series B from L Catterton, Sequoia India and other investors – TechCrunch

Zenyum, a startup that wants to make cosmetic dentistry more affordable, announced today it has raised a $40 million Series B. This includes $25 million from L Catterton, a private equity firm focused on consumer brands. The round’s other participants were Sequoia Capital India (Zenyum is an alum of its Surge accelerator program), RTP Global, Partech, TNB Aura, Seeds Capital and FEBE Ventures. L Catteron Asia’s head of growth investments, Anjana Sasidharan, will join Zenyum’s board.

This brings Zenyum’s total raised so far to $56 million, including a $13.6 million Series A announced in November 2019. In a press statement, Sasidharan said, “Zenyum’s differentiated business model gives it a strong competitive advantage, and we are excited to partner with the founder management team to help them realize their growth ambitions.” Other dental-related investments in L Catteron’s portfolio include Ideal Image, ClearChoice, dentalcorp, OdontoCompany, Espaçolaser and 98point6.

Founded in 2018, the company’s products now include ZenyumSonic electric toothbrushes; Zenyum Clear, or transparent 3D-printed aligners; and ZenyumClear Plus for more complex teeth realignment cases.

Founder and chief executive officer Julian Artopé told TechCrunch that ZenyumClear aligners can be up to 70% cheaper than other braces, including traditional metal braces, lingual braces and other clear aligners like Invisalign, depending on the condition of a patients’ teeth and what they want to achieve. Zenyum Clear costs $2,400 SGD (about $1,816 USD), while ZenyumClear Plus ranges from $3,300 to $3,900 SGD (about $2,497 to $2,951 USD).

The company is able to reduce the cost of its invisible braces by combining a network of dental partners with a technology stack that allows providers to monitor patients’ progress while reducing the number of clinic visits they need to make.

First, potential customers send a photo of their teeth to Zenyum to determine if ZenyumClear or ZenyumClear Plus will work for them. If so, they have an in-person consultation with a dentists, including an X-ray and 3D scan. This costs between $120 to $170 SGD, which is paid to the clinic. After their invisible braces are ready, the patient returns to the dentist for a fitting. Then dentists can monitor the progress of their patient’s teeth through Zenyum’s app, only asking them to make another in-person visit if necessary.

ZenyumClear is currently available in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan, with more markets planned.

Sequoia India principal Pieter Kemps told TechCrunch, “There are 300M customers in Zenyum’s core markets—Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan—who have increased disposable income for beauty. We believe spend on invisible braces will grow significantly from the current penetration, but what it requires is strong execution on a complex product to become the preferred choice for consumers. That is where Zenyum shines: excellent execution, leading to new products, best-in-class NPS, fast growth, and strong economics. This Series B is a testament to that, and of the belief in the large opportunity down the road.”

Richard Colbeck admits not knowing how many aged care workers have been vaccinated | Aged care (Australia)

The aged care minister Richard Colbeck has admitted he doesn’t know how many workers in the aged care sector have been vaccinated, but says he’s comfortable with the pace of the rollout despite the fresh Covid outbreak in Melbourne.

The Morrison government is under intensifying pressure after two aged care workers and a resident tested positive to Covid-19, laying bare the persistent vulnerabilities in a sector Canberra funds and regulates.

During the first wave of the pandemic last year, more than 600 people died in Australia in residential aged care. The government has said previously aged care residents would be vaccinated by March.

Officials for the Department of Health told a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday that 44,333 aged care residents had received a vaccination, and of that cohort, 25,319 had received their second dose.

Colbeck told the ABC on Tuesday he didn’t know how many workers had been vaccinated because the government did not have consolidated data. “I’m not going to give you a number I am not certain of,” the aged care minister said.

The minister said staff in some facilities had been vaccinated if there were doses left over after inoculating residents. The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee is now considering whether to make coronavirus vaccinations compulsory for workers in the sector.

Colbeck acknowledged that “everybody” would have liked the vaccination program to be delivered more quickly, but he said he was comfortable with where things were at and “we’ve done it as quickly as we possibly could”.

“Everybody’s working assiduously to provide as much support as they possibly can to ensure the safety of residents in residential aged care,” he said.

The minister was also asked why the government lifted the ban on employees working at multiple facilities which was imposed during the last outbreak.

It was revealed on Monday that staff from two of the aged care facilities affected by Melbourne’s latest Covid outbreak, Arcare Maidstone and BlueCross Western Gardens, were working across multiple sites, prompting lockdowns at the facilities, with residents now confined to their rooms.

The ban was not reimposed until last week, when the latest outbreak led to Melbourne being designated a hotspot. Aged care workers are not well paid, and often work across multiple facilities to supplement their incomes.

Outside of outbreaks the guidelines are not mandatory. Colbeck said on Tuesday morning it was not legal “to limit somebody’s capacity to work”.

The minister said the Health Services Union took an aged care provider to the Fair Work Commission in March last year to uphold the rights of workers to do shifts in multiple facilities.

The shadow aged care minister, Clare O’Neil, declared that failing to know how many staff had been vaccinated in aged care facilities in the middle of a pandemic was “nothing short of gross incompetence”.

“How does Richard Colbeck still have a job?” O’Neil said.

The crown jewel of Nakatomi’s vault is undoubtedly the Specialist Bonus, a pickup that converts the player into a one-man army. The Specialist Bonus allows players to accrue perks as they kill opponents in the Warzone, as opposed to normally obtaining killstreaks. While missing out on killstreaks can be inconvenient, the Specialist Bonus is largely considered more beneficial as it can turn a Warzone player into a super soldier as long as they rack up the kills.

But is it here for good?

Having been introduced as part of the Nakatomi Plaza inclusion, it’s likely that the Specialist Bonus will be departing Warzone when the plaza does on June 15th. However, Activision has indicated that the current season and likely future seasons will carry many more time-limited events similar to the current Reloaded event. This will present players with a shifting and more dynamic experience in Warzone as content cycles at a significantly more regular rate alongside the events.

What does this mean for the Specialist Bonus? Warzone’s community very well may not have seen the last of the pickup when Nakatomi Plaza is gone.

The Call of Duty series, as a whole, is well-known for bringing back fan-favorite content, regardless of whether it is weapons, perks or game modes. Considering Warzone is a long-term “gaming as a service” project, it is highly likely that future events will bring the Specialist Bonus back to the forefront in some capacity. Specifics are unclear, but Call of Duty is a series known for making the most of its available assets, so tossing out an entire game mechanic is not likely. Especially one as intriguing and exciting as the Specialist Bonus.

The Specialist Bonus may very well return after Season 3’s conclusion, or perhaps when a new content update is released or a time-limited event kicks off. Whenever it does reappear, it will undoubtedly be sought after by many players throughout the in-game community. The allure of having so many perks at once is simply too much to pass up on.

And who knows? Maybe one day it’ll become a Warzone mainstay.

In new photos, which surfaced on April 30, construction was underway on the properties of the two mega mansions that were built in 2020.

A source close to the family recently spoke to HollywoodLife about why the TV stars turned businesswomen are so involved in the real estate market. “Kylie and Kris are buying so much property purely for business purposes,” the insider dished. “It’s a tax write off and they’re smart business women and it makes sense. Kylie especially has gotten really into learning about the real estate market as a side project.”

The source added, “A lot of people don’t know this, but Khloe also has been buying and selling real estate for the same reasons. They’ll keep doing it too. Federal court rejects challenge to Australia’s outbound travel ban | Law (Australia)

The rightwing thinktank Libertyworks has lost its federal court challenge to Australia’s outbound travel ban.

On Tuesday the full federal court unanimously rejected Libertyworks’ bid to overturn the Covid-19 restriction, which had argued that the health minister, Greg Hunt, has no power to impose a blanket rule stopping citizens from leaving the country.

Justices Anna Katzmann, Michael Wigney and Thomas Thawley dismissed the application and ordered Libertyworks to pay the commonwealth’s costs.

The federal government had argued that, if successful, the case would have “driven a truck” through Hunt’s powers under the Biosecurity Act to impose measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during the global pandemic.

The case is the fourth failed challenge to Australia’s coronavirus restrictions, after Clive Palmer’s failure to overturn Western Australia’s travel ban, a high court decision upholding the validity of Victoria’s second wave lockdown, and the federal court rejecting a bid to overturn the travel ban from India.

Despite the ban, more than 140,000 Australian citizens and permanent residents have left Australia since the start of the pandemic under a regime of exemptions administered by Australian Border Force.

In May national cabinet agreed these exemptions should be reviewed after the WA premier, Mark McGowan, supported by the Victorian government, called for a crackdown.

In their joint reasons, the justices said the health minister’s powers were “intended to be used in circumstances where there is an emergency of such scale and significance as to require management at a national level”.

Accepting Libertyworks’ interpretation would mean only individuals could be ordered not to travel. The justices said it “defies belief” that parliament had intended this and such a reading would “emasculate” the minister’s powers.

“It would mean, for example, that the only way to prevent or reduce the risk of contagion from Australians who travel overseas during a pandemic would be through making a human biosecurity control order on every single individual who wishes to do so and then only for no more than 28 days.”

Interpreting the act as only allowing restrictions on movement within Australia “would substantially limit the minister’s power” and be “contrary to the plain words” of the act, they said.

School day to be extended in England, leaked ‘Covid catch-up’ plan suggests | Schools

The government is considering paying teachers to add an extra 30 minutes to the school day in England under leaked proposals to help pupils overcome a year of disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A plan drawn up by Sir Kevan Collins, the government’s education recovery commissioner, seeks to establish a minimum 35-hour week and add 100 hours of additional schooling compared with existing timetables in many state schools and colleges.

The details come from a 56-page document reported by the Times newspaper, which said Boris Johnson had been briefed on the plan. The proposals are also expected to include further individual or small-group tutoring for five million students and professional development for teachers.

The government has been working on a promised “catch-up” plan for schools and colleges, expected to be published before the summer holidays, but the rumoured £15bn price tag – £700 per pupil over three years – is said to have run into opposition from the Treasury and the chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

Funding the package will hinge on support from No 10 but it adds to the battles the Department for Education (DfE) faces before the autumn spending review, as it is already seeking additional funding for the government’s lifetime skills guarantee as well as an £11bn bill for school and college repairs identified in a report published last week.

The government is also keen to set a target for recruiting and training new teachers before the end of the parliament, as part of the education recovery plan.

Collins’ recovery plan focuses on “three Ts” of time, teaching and tutoring, paid for by a “recovery premium”, with £12bn of the £15bn paid directly to schools and targeted at disadvantaged pupils. Headteachers would be given a high degree of autonomy over how they spent the funds, which would be monitored by Ofsted school inspectors rather than the DfE directly.

Other proposals that have been considered include an extension of the school day from 8am to 5pm or 6pm, but with the extra time used for voluntary extracurricular activities such as art or sport. But Collins has argued that making attendance voluntary would mean the children who most need the additional support missing out.

“The more voluntary things are, the less likely they’re going to get to the hard to reach bits of your community,” he told a House of Lords committee last month.

Collins’ report argues that the UK as a whole had the longest closures of schools and universities combined in Europe. Many students in England missed around 23 weeks of school closures during the pandemic, with a cost to the economy of “at least” £100bn in lost productivity, rising to £1.6tn by 2100 if not addressed.

However, research published last week by a University of Cambridge academic found that schools in England with longer teaching hours in their timetable made only modest improvements in their students’ performance, and that other interventions may be more cost effective.

Kate Green, the shadow education secretary, is set to publish Labour’s recovery plan later this week, which is likely to back many aspects of Collins’ plan but with a stronger focus on mental health.

The British Psychological Society said that instead of additional time in the classroom, resources would be better spent allowing children to play, socialise and engage in activities such as music, crafts and sports that were also missed out on while schools were closed to most pupils during the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.

For some, the leftist, centrist and Arab constituents of the putative new alliance would have only a limited effect on Mr. Bennett and other right-wing members.

“They’re all fig leaves,” said Diana Buttu, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and a former legal adviser to the Palestine Liberation Organization. “We may see a softer, gentler outward face. But I’m fairly certain that the policies are going to remain the same, if not worse, under Bennett.”

Others were more hopeful that an equilibrium would be maintained. Some said the likely appointment of a center-left minister to oversee the police force might encourage officers to exercise more restraint, following several controversial police actions in recent months that contributed to rising unrest in Jerusalem.

For ultra-Orthodox Israelis, or Haredim, the putative new coalition is troublesome because it would be formed without the involvement of either of the two main Haredi parties, which have participated in most coalition governments this century.

But for others, that was cause for qualified celebration.

Anat Hoffman, a campaigner for a more pluralistic approach to Judaism in Israel, did not expect the coalition to last its full term, nor for it to significantly weaken the control over religious affairs currently exerted by Orthodox rabbis. But she hoped it might create a more tolerant atmosphere that would show “there is more than one way to be Jewish, and more than one way to be an Israeli, and more than one way to be an Israeli patriot.”

“This is a huge thing for us,” said Ms. Hoffman, the executive director of the Israel Religious Action Center, a group that advocates religious pluralism. “To have a normal government without, every day, one of the government members coming up with a more extreme sweeping initiative that rocks our whole country.”

Why you may be struggling with brain fog and how to beat it

If you’ve struggled to think clearly during the coronavirus pandemic, you could be experiencing “brain fog” – and one neuroscientist has explained how to beat it.

“Brain fog is a collection of symptoms which give rise to loss of mental clarity or foggy thinking,” Sabina Brennan wrote in her recently published book “Beating brain fog.”

While there are no statistics on the prevalence of brain fog specifically, Brennan highlighted that around 600 million people worldwide suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which she said is a clinical description of this issue.

Difficulty thinking clearly has also been noted as one of the debilitating symptoms of “long Covid.” But even if you haven’t had the coronavirus this past year, Brennan told CNBC you might still have experienced brain fog and outlined some ways to overcome it.

The brain loves patterns

According to Brennan, one of the main reasons people experience brain fog is because of a lack of routine.

Prior to the pandemic, Brennan said that around 40% of our behaviors were habitual, and this is “essential in order for our brain to function effectively.”

This is because the brain relies on patterns.

Speaking to CNBC via video call, Brennan explained that the brain is a high-energy organ, using around a quarter of the nutrients we consume. The cerebral cortex, known as the “thinking part of the brain,” is biggest consumer of energy.

In order to process this energy efficiently, the brain is constantly scanning for patterns.

This is so it can carry out “automated behavior using far less resources,” she said. The thinking part of the brain is really only engaged at the beginning and end of an activity, “like a bookend,” with the emotional, or limbic, section of the brain taking care of the rest.

“By definition, it’s effortless, it’s autopilot. You hear a lot about people saying we spend too much time on autopilot — that may be true — but we must spend some time on autopilot, otherwise our brain is overwhelmed completely,” Brennan said.

Morning routines

Much of our morning routine prior to the pandemic was habitual, Brennan said. So you might not have your “first conscious engagement stress on your brain until maybe 9:30 a.m.,” when you arrived at the office.

The spread of Covid and subsequent lockdowns disturbed much of that routine, she said, as most people started to work from home. This presented a number of challenges, such as finding somewhere suitable to work, motivating yourself to get dressed and going to bed at a reasonable time.

As such, Brennan said it was common for behavior to became quite “erratic” during this time, making it hard for the brain to identify a pattern.

“Your brain is really overwhelmed by that, so there’s very little left to do the really cognitive stuff,” she said.

A key first step to overcoming brain fog is to reintroduce routine, Brennan said, suggesting that people even create a “fake commute” like a walk around the block to “bookend the day.”

‘Sleep debt’

Brennan stressed that brain fog was not a “diagnosis, disease or a disorder,” but instead a sign of something underlying such a health problem or the consequence of lifestyle choices — such as lack of sleep.

In fact, she said getting enough sleep was crucial in combatting brain fog, as it allows time for the brain to clean out toxins.

She said that it’s comparable to “having the streets cleaned at nighttime when there’s no traffic on them.”

“That’s essentially what the brain really needs, is you not to be engaged in cognitive activity so that it can do a really deep clean and clear out those toxins,” she added.

One simple way to tell if you’re not getting enough sleep, Brennan said, is if you wake up feeling groggy. This is sign that the sleep chemical adenosine, which makes us drowsy, has not fully cleared out of the body and that you’re in “sleep debt,” she explained.

In addition, Brennan said that exercise was crucial to dealing with brain fog, as it releases a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor. It acts like a “fertilizer,” which makes it easier for brain cells and connections to grow.
