Neanderthal DNA In Patients Can Make COVID-19 Severe: Study

Genetic factors can also play a role in coronavirus, as the new findings make it clear. (File)
Paris:
Covid-19 patients with a snippet of Neanderthal DNA that crossed into the human genome some 60,000 years ago run a higher risk of severe complications from the disease, researchers have reported.
People infected with the new coronavirus, for example, who carry the genetic coding bequeathed by our early human cousins are three times more likely to need mechanical ventilation, according to a study published Wednesday in Nature.
There are many reasons why some people with Covid-19 wind up in intensive care and other have only light symptoms, or none at all.
Advanced age, being a man, and pre-existing medical problems can all increase the odds of a serious outcome.
But genetic factors can also play a role, as the new findings make it clear.
“It is striking that the genetic heritage from Neanderthals has such tragic consequences during the current pandemic,” said co-author Svante Paabo, director of the department of genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.
Recent research by the Covid-19 Host Genetics Initiative revealed that a genetic variant in a particular region of chromosome 3 — one of 23 chromosomes in the human genome — is associated with more severe forms of the disease.
That same region was known to harbour genetic code of Neanderthal origins, so Paabo and co-author Hugo Zeberg, also from Max Planck, decided to look for a link with Covid-19.
Unevenly distributed
They found that a Neanderthal individual from southern Europe carried an almost identical genetic segment, which spans some 50,000 so-called base pairs, the primary building blocks of DNA.
Tellingly, two Neanderthals found in southern Siberia, along with a specimen from another early human species that also wandered Eurasia, the Denisovans, did not carry the telltale snippet.
Modern humans and Neanderthals could have inherited the gene fragment from a common ancestor some half-million years ago, but it is far more likely to have entered the homo sapiens gene pool through more recent interbreeding, the researchers concluded.
The potentially dangerous string of Neanderthal DNA is not evenly distributed today across the globe, the study showed.
Some 16 percent of Europeans carry it, and about half the population across South Asia, with the highest proportion — 63 percent — found in Bangladesh.
This could help explain why individuals of Bangladeshi descent living in Britain are twice as likely to die from Covid-19 as the general population, the authors speculate.
In East Asia and Africa the gene variant is virtually absent.
About two percent of DNA in non-Africans across the globe originate with Neanderthals, earlier studies have shown.
Denisovan remnants are also widespread but more sporadic, comprising less than one percent of the DNA among Asians and Native Americans, and about five percent of aboriginal Australians and the people of Papua New Guinea.

Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict: Russia offers to host Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Russia has offered to host talks on ending the fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenian forces in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the offer in calls to both governments, his office said – adding that he had urged a halt to “warlike rhetoric”.
More than 100 deaths have been reported since Sunday, in the heaviest fighting in years over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Officially part of Azerbaijan, it is governed by ethnic Armenians
Armenia and Azerbaijan – two former Soviet republics – fought a war in 1988-1994 over the region. There are growing fears that international powers could be dragged into the conflict.
On Wednesday, Mr Lavrov’s office said he had called the foreign ministers of both Armenia and Azerbaijan to say Russia was willing to host talks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the fighting with French President Emmanuel Macron in a separate telephone call. Both leaders reiterated calls by world powers for an immediate ceasefire.
Russia is part of a military alliance with Armenia and has a military base in the country. However, it also has close ties to the government of Azerbaijan.
-
What are Armenia and Azerbaijan fighting over?
- Why Caucasus flare-up risks wider war
Armenia backs the self-declared republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, but has never officially recognised it.
It is unclear what triggered the recent fighting. On Wednesday, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev vowed to fight on until Armenian forces left the territory.
“We only have one condition: Armenian armed forces must unconditionally, fully, and immediately leave our lands,” he said.
Azerbaijan published video of what it said was the destruction of two “enemy” tanks and said an Armenian battalion had fled the area around the village of Tonashen.
Armenian media said three civilians had been killed in an Azerbaijani air attack on the town of Martakert on Wednesday. State news agency Armenpress said seven civilians and 80 service personnel had been killed since the fighting began.
Armenia’s defence ministry also released a picture of an Armenian SU-25 jet it said had been shot down by a Turkish F-16 on Tuesday. Turkey, a staunch ally of Azerbaijan, has rejected the allegation as “cheap propaganda”.
One fighter has told BBC Arabic he was recruited in northern Syria last week and sent via Turkey to fight in the conflict. Ilnur Cevik, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, dismissed the report as “completely unfounded”.
The conflict has raised tensions between Nato allies France and Turkey. France is home to many people of Armenian ancestry while Turkey has traditionally supported its fellow Turkic nation Azerbaijan.
On Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu accused France of supporting Armenian occupation in Azerbaijan.
Mr Macron hit back, criticising “warlike messages” from Turkey “which essentially remove any of Azerbaijan’s inhibitions in recapturing Nagorno-Karabakh”.
“And that we won’t accept,” he added.
After Mr Macron and Mr Putin held talks, the Kremlin issued a statement saying they had discussed future steps that the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) could take to help resolve the conflict.
The Minsk Group was set up in 1992 and is chaired by France, Russia and the US.
Nagorno-Karabakh – key facts
- A mountainous region of about 4,400 sq km (1,700 sq miles)
- Traditionally inhabited by Christian Armenians and Muslim Turks
- In Soviet times, it became an autonomous region within the republic of Azerbaijan
- Internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, but majority of population is ethnic Armenian
- Self-proclaimed authorities are not recognised by any UN member, including Armenia
- An estimated one million people displaced by war in 1988-94, and about 30,000 killed
- Separatist forces captured some extra territory around the enclave in Azerbaijan
- Stalemate has largely prevailed since a 1994 ceasefire
- Turkey openly supports Azerbaijan
- Russia has a military base in Armenia

Kris Jenner & Kourtney Kardashian Respond To Ex-Bodyguard’s Lawsuit – Hollywood Life
Kris Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian’s attorney blasted their former security guard’s lawsuit as ‘absurd.’ Marc McWilliams accused Jenner of ‘unwelcome sexual advances,’ and claimed both she and her daughter acted out of ‘retaliation.’
Kris Jenner, 64, and her daughter Kourtney Kardashian, 41, are “vehemently” denying the alarming allegations detailed in a lawsuit brought on by their former security guard, Marc McWilliams. In the lawsuit filed on Sept. 11 and reviewed by HollywoodLife, Marc claimed that he was “subject to a pattern of unwanted and unwelcome sexual advances and otherwise harassing misconduct” from Jenner specifically, and further claimed that both defendants (Jenner and Kardashian) “refused to take action” to stop these alleged “attacks” and engaged in “retaliation.” However, Jenner and Kardashian’s attorney Marty Singer clapped back against the many accusations.
“Kris Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian vehemently deny the completely false claims made by former security guard Marc McWilliams. His absurd allegations are clearly fabricated and are contrary to easily confirmed facts,” Jenner and Kardashian’s attorney told HollywoodLife in a statement. Singer added, “Kris never acted inappropriately toward him. The security company stopped assigning McWilliams to work there after the guard was repeatedly caught sleeping in his car on the job. Significantly, McWilliams never made any complaints to his employer about Kris until contriving this ludicrous claim a year later.”
Their attorney also touched on the Poosh founder’s mention in the lawsuit, telling HollywoodLife, “Although Kourtney is named in the suit, she is not accused of doing anything improper, nor did she do so. When Kris and Kourtney defeat this frivolous lawsuit, they intend to immediately sue McWilliams and his attorneys for malicious prosecution.”
McWilliams began working for both Jenner and Kardashian around Feb. 2017, according to his lawsuit. The former security guard alleged that around May of that year, he became “subject to a pattern of unwanted and unwelcome sexual advances and otherwise harassing misconduct” which allegedly included comments “directed at [his] physical appearance,” his “sexual activities,” as well as comments “suggesting that [he] engage in a romantic and sexual relationship,” “concerning the physical appearance and sexual activities of other employees,” and “concerning the physical appearance of male members and staff.” He also claimed he was victim to “derogatory comments concerning [his] sex/gender.” These allegations were detailed in page four of the court documents, which you can see above.
On top of these alleged comments, McWilliams accused Jenner of embarking on “a pattern of conduct involving non-consensual physical contact with [him] of an inappropriate and sexual nature,” per page four of the court documents. The former employee wrote that he complained to his supervisors, and claimed that both Jenner and Kardashian allegedly “failed and refused to take action” to stop Jenner’s “attacks” against him in the work place. McWilliams also claimed that he repeatedly informed Jenner “that such misconduct was unwelcome” and asked her to “cease and desist,” but that the Keeping Up with the Kardashians executive producer would “ignore all such requests.”
McWilliams went into further detail about this alleged “physical contact”; on page 10 of the court documents, he accused Jenner of “massaging” his neck, shoulders, back and arms and “resting” her hand on his “thigh and groins.” The ex-security guard also accused Jenner of touching his “rear-end” without his consent, per page 11 of the lawsuit.
After making his “complaints” known, McWilliams accused Jenner of “intentionally retaliating” against him beginning around Sept. 2018, according to page five of the documents. McWilliams claimed Kardashian joined in on this retaliation, and accused the mother and daughter of allegedly “berating” him, “fabricating false disciplinary excuses” like tardiness, and “mocking” him in front of co-workers, per page five of the lawsuit documents. As a result of the alleged actions listed above, McWilliams wrote that he now “continues to suffer severe emotional distress, embarrassment, shame” and “equal employment privileges and/or job advancement,” per page eight of the lawsuit.
McWilliams claimed that he was “suspended” from work shifts under Jenner in Sept. 2018, and from there on out worked with just Kardashian until Feb. 2019 with a “punitive reduction” in his “hourly rate, wages and work shifts,” per page six of the documents. McWilliams reported that he filed a claim with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing in Sept. 2019, but the DFEH notified the security guard that his case against Jenner and Kardashian was “closed” — hence, what led him to file this lawsuit.

Joe Biden Takes On Donald Trump In First Presidential Debate

US Presidential Debate: The debate will last for an estimated 90 minutes.
New Delhi:
Ahead of the US presidential election on 3 November, Democrat leader Joe Biden and the incumbent Republican President Donald Trump will go head-to-head in their maiden debate Tuesday night (US time). The debate, hosted by Fox News, will be the first of three debates ahead of November’s election.
The Presidential election debate will offer the two leader a platform to outline their visions for a country ravaged by multiple crises, including Black Live Matter protests and the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 lives in American and led to an economic downturn. The debate will last for an estimated 90 minutes.
Here are the Live updates from US Presidential Debate: :
Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden did not shake hands or wear masks as they entered their first White House debate on Tuesday, adhering to protocols on social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.
The two candidates entered the stage at the same time and smiled as moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News explained they would not shake hands. “How you doing, man?” Biden said, extending his arms towards Trump.
President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden took the stage Tuesday for their first televised debate, watched by a deeply divided nation 35 days ahead of the most tense US election in recent memory. There was no handshake as the two men took the stage and while this was due to Covid-19 restrictions, the absence of the traditional greeting symbolized the bitterness engulfing the country in the final countdown to November 3.

Joyce Echaquan: Outcry in Canada over treatment of dying indigenous woman
Image copyright
Getty Images
A nurse has been fired from a Canadian hospital after a video emerged showing a dying indigenous woman screaming in distress and being insulted by staff.
Quebec Premier Francois Legault said the nurse’s remarks were “unacceptable” and “racist”.
He said Joyce Echaquan’s death would be thoroughly investigated.
It is the latest in a series of incidents that have raised questions about systemic racism faced by Canada’s indigenous citizens.
In 2015 a report found that racism against indigenous people in Canada’s healthcare system contributed to their overall poorer health outcomes, compared to non-indigenous Canadians.
What happened?
Ms Echaquan, a 37-year-old Atikamekw woman, had gone to the Joliette hospital about 70km (45 miles) from Montreal suffering from stomach pains.
The mother of seven filmed herself in her hospital bed screaming and calling for urgent help.
- Case dropped against indigenous chief battered by police
A member of staff can be heard saying to her, in French: “You’re stupid as hell.” Another says Ms Echaquan had made bad choices in life and asks what her children would think of her behaviour.
Ms Echaquan died soon afterwards. Her relatives told Radio-Canada that she had a history of heart trouble and was worried that she was being given too much morphine.
What has the reaction been?
“The nurse, what she said, is totally unacceptable, it’s racist and she was fired,” Premier Legault told a news conference. “We must fight this racism.”
He announced two investigations. One will be conducted by regional health authorities and the other by a forensic pathologist responsible for investigating deaths in suspicious circumstances or due to negligence.
In a tweet, Canadian First Nations advocate and politician Perry Bellegarde said the incident showed that discrimination against indigenous people in Canada’s healthcare system remained prevalent.
The Atikamekw council of Manawan said the remarks “clearly demonstrate racism against First Nations”.
Ghislain Picard, Grand Chief of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, said racism was “very often the fruit of government policies which lead to systemic discrimination”.
Mary Hannaburg, vice-president of Quebec Native Women, said the video was a “very hard thing to hear and to listen to”, broadcaster CBC reported.
“The statements that are made are not going to be tolerated. Those are of a racist nature,” she said.
A vigil for Ms Echaquan was held outside the Joliette hospital on Tuesday evening and an online fundraising campaign has been set up to support her children.
What’s the background?
In recent years Canada has been coming to terms with racial injustice suffered by its indigenous people.
Last year a government inquiry found that Canada was complicit in “race-based genocide” against indigenous women.
The report said indigenous women were 12 times more likely to be killed or to disappear than other women in Canada. The inquiry said the cause was deep-rooted colonialism and state inaction.
In June this year, video of an indigenous chief Allan Adam being repeatedly punched by police while being arrested shocked the country.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Canada has a problem with systemic racism “in all our institutions, including in all our police forces”.
Also in June, health authorities in the province of British Columbia launched an investigation amid claims that some hospital staff were betting on the blood alcohol level of indigenous patients.

Barry Jenkins Is Making A Prequel To “The Lion King”

Well, this is unusual news. When you think about what an Academy Award winning filmmaker might be planning for his next feature, you don’t immediately jump to Disney prequels. Well, that’s not the case if you’re Barry Jenkins, it seems. Jenkins has signed on to develop and direct a prequel to The Lion King, which it’s safe to say is surprising news. At the same time, this kind of unusual hard right turn from what you might expect out of the man is part of what makes it so interesting. After all, Jenkins must have an interesting take on the material, right? Read on for more…
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins is signing up to direct a prequel of The Lion King for Disney, taking over for Jon Favreau. Jeff Nathanson has returned to write a first draft for the film. Disney obviously wants to make this a franchise, considering how much money the first movie made. As for Jenkins, it must represent an interesting creative opportunity, to say the least. Whether this is the project you’d hope for him or not, having this man in the world of blockbuster filmmaking presents some intriguing possibilities.
Here’s a bit from the story at THR:

More Lion King is on the way, courtesy of director Barry Jenkins. The Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker will helm a prequel to Disney’s 2019 hit. Lion King scribe Jeff Nathanson has penned a draft of the prequel.
Jon Favreau directed the first installment, a remake of the 1994 animated classic. It used innovative techniques to create photorealistic animals and African landscapes and voice starred Donald Glover as Simba and Beyoncé as Nala. It became a massive hit, earning $1.65 billion globally for Disney.
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters. Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true,” said Jenkins in a statement.
Jenkins earned a screenwriting Oscar for 2017 best picture winner Moonlight, which he directed, and was also nominated for his screenplay for his directorial follow-up, 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk. He recently wrapped filming on the Amazon limited series The Underground Railroad.
Nathanson’s credits also include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) for Disney.

Stay tuned for more!

At Least 5 Iraqi Civilians Killed In Anti-US Rocket Attack

Three Iraqi children and two women from the same family were killed Monday. (Representational)
Baghdad, Iraq:
Three Iraqi children and two women from the same family were killed Monday when a rocket targeting Baghdad airport, where US troops are stationed, fell instead on their home, the army said.
The latest in a string of attacks targeting American interests in Iraq, it came after Washington threatened to close its embassy and withdraw its 3,000 troops from the country unless the rockets stop.
Attacks over the past year have caused relatively few casualties, and Monday’s incident was notable for the number of civilians killed.
The army said it also wounded two children.
Twitter accounts supporting US arch-enemy Iran regularly praise the attacks, but that was not the case Monday, when no group immediately claimed responsibility.
Half a dozen previously unheard-of factions have claimed similar attacks in recent months, under the banner of “Islamic resistance” against the “American occupier”.
But experts say they are a smokescreen, and that they include former members of pro-Iranian factions of the Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary alliance, a state-sponsored network close to Tehran.
The deaths of civilians could put the group responsible in an uncomfortable position with a public exhausted by years of violence by various armed groups.
The Iraqi army on Monday accused “criminal gangs and groups of outlaws” of seeking to “create chaos and terrorise people”.
Between October and July, at least 39 rocket attacks targeted US interests in Iraq. Almost the same number again have taken place since.
In total, four soldiers — two British, one Iraqi and one American — along with a US and an Iraqi contracter have been killed in the attacks, while several civilians have been wounded.
Iraqi intelligence sources have blamed the attacks on a small group of hardline Iran-backed paramilitary factions.
– ‘Honeymoon is over’ –
Senior American officers today see pro-Iran armed groups as a greater threat than the Islamic State jihadist group, that once held a third of Iraq.
Washington has demanded that Baghdad take decisive action.
But Iraq must play a delicate balancing act with US influence and that of neighbouring Iran, which arms, finances and supports various armed Shiite factions.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Iraqi President Barham Saleh this month and threatened to close the American embassy in Baghdad, Iraqi and foreign officials told AFP.
That was seen as a new blow to premier Mustafa al-Kadhemi, who took office as prime minister in May.
While he is seen as western-leaning, US officials have accused him of not doing enough against pro-Iran groups.
One Iraqi official told AFP: “The honeymoon is over.”
The American ultimatum was followed by threats of sanctions against senior political and military figures.
Populist Shiite cleric and politician Moqtada Sadr has since called for a commission of inquiry into the rocket attacks, a proposal backed by Kadhemi.
The Hashed paramilitary alliance has dismissed several commanders accused of links to attacks on western interests, while denying responsibility for the acts of groups claiming Hashed links and “carrying out illegal military acts against foreign interests”.
But more hardline groups have stepped up the anti-US rhetoric.
One western official told AFP on condition of anonymity: “If Washington follows through and withdraws its people, these groups will be able to brag that they kicked the Americans out of Iraq at little cost.

Coronavirus: Global Covid-19 death toll passes one million
Image copyright
EPA
Funerals for victims, like here in Indonesia, have to be carried out using tight security
The number of people worldwide who have died from Covid-19 has passed one million, researchers say, with many regions still reporting surging numbers of new infections.
According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University the death toll now stands at 1,000,555.
The US, Brazil and India make up nearly half of that total.
Experts caution that because of differences in recording deaths the true figure is probably much higher.
The grim milestone comes nearly 10 months after news of the new coronavirus began to emerge in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
The pandemic has since spread to 188 countries with more than 32 million confirmed cases. Lockdowns and other measures to try to stop the virus spreading have thrown many economies into recession.
Meanwhile, efforts to develop an effective vaccine are continuing – although the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the death toll could hit two million before one is widely available.
The US has the world’s highest death toll with about 205,000 fatalities followed by Brazil on 141,700 and India with 95,500 deaths.
Where is Covid-19 spreading the fastest?
The US has recorded more than seven million cases – more than a fifth of the world’s total. After a second wave of cases in July, numbers dropped in August but appear to be on the rise again now.
Media playback is unsupported on your device
The coronavirus has been spreading fast in India, with the country recording about 90,000 cases a day earlier in September.
- Where are the global coronavirus hotspots?
Confirmed infections in India have reached six million – the second-highest after the US. However, given the size of its population India has seen a relatively low death rate.
Brazil has the highest number of deaths in Latin America and has recorded more than 4.7 million cases, the third highest in the world.
Elsewhere in the region, newly confirmed infections are also rising quickly in Argentina, which now has more than 700,000 cases.
How is the hunt for a vaccine progressing?
Globally there are about 240 potential vaccines in early development, with 40 in clinical trials and nine in the final stage of testing on thousands of people. Vaccine development normally takes years but because of the global emergency, scientists are working at breakneck speed.
One being developed by the University of Oxford – already in an advanced stage of testing – has shown it can trigger an immune response and a deal has been signed with AstraZeneca to supply 100 million doses in the UK alone.
- When will we have a vaccine?
- Who would get the vaccine and how?
In China, a potential vaccine has been shown to produce protective antibodies and is being made available to the Chinese military. However, concerns have been raised about the speed at which the vaccine is being produced.
Media playback is unsupported on your device
Meanwhile in Russia, scientists say early tests on a vaccine called Sputnik-V show signs of an immune response.
In a report earlier this month, they said that every participant in trials developed antibodies to fight the virus and suffered no serious side effects.
Russia licensed the vaccine for local use in August – the first country to do so. Again, there was concern at the speed of the process and some experts said the early trials had been too small to prove effectiveness and safety.
In the US, President Donald Trump has said Americans should be able to access a vaccine as early as October although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a vaccine is unlikely to be widely available before mid-2021.
The WHO has said it does not expect to see widespread vaccinations against Covid-19 until the middle of 2021.
